Picasso Apartment, Madrid, Spain

0

When Picasso was 16 years old, his father and uncle sent the young artist to the country’s foremost art college in Madrid — the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Soon after he enrolled, he dropped out, spending more time exploring the city’s other attractions like the Museo Nacional del Prado. Both art spaces still exist (and are well worth exploring), but Picasso himself is long gone. He moved to France and passed away in 1973. But this apartment in the Embajadores-Lavapiés district, where he once lived, captures the spirit of the artist in a playful yet elegant way.

The home is made up of a living room with three bedrooms. The main space, a long, white, airy room has couches for lounging, a table for dining, and (rather unexpectedly) leads into a blood red bar (with turquoise velvet and gold fittings) and a modern kitchen (also red).

Each bedroom is different. The Blue and Green room has two single beds that can be converted into a king (on request) with a private (Cubist) bathroom. The Yellow room has one queen and a private bathroom. The Chill-Out room is separated from the living room by a sliding glass door and curtain. It has a double bed with its own balcony overlooking the street. There’s an additional single daybed in the living room.

This vacation home rental in Madrid is a vividly artistic space that places comfort front and center. Perfect for a large family, or group of friends sharing.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Air conditioning, heating, wifi, washer and dryer, dishwasher, hairdryer, TV, wireless intercom, and toiletries.

AROUND

The flat is located in a very bohemian neighborhood full of artists. It’s a great location for getting to know a bustling and authentic side of Madrid. It’s also great for foodies, with its famous tapas bars in Cava Baja, Cava Alta and Plaza Mayor, and the market in San Miguel is a gastronomic experience not to be missed. The Puerta del Sol, Calle Mayor, Arenal, Carretas and Gran Vía shopping areas are all within five minutes’ walking distance.

A highlight for any visitor is El Rastro, the most popular open-air flea market in Spain, with a vast array of antiquaries, art dealers, and other ephemera. It’s open every Sunday and on holidays, and lends the neighborhood an electric energy on Sunday mornings.

This villa for rent in Italy is perched above the Amalfi coast just outside of the small village of Priora in Sorrento.

Built in the 19th century, it has been in the same family for generations with a treasured legacy that seeks to preserve the original lifestyle and cultural touchpoints of the area including the famous lemon groves of Sorrento.

Set within lush gardens, the three storey villa offers amazing views of the coast and the Bay of Naples and has been entirely refurbished mixing the original, old world architecture with modern touches.

The gardens and lemon groves are very characteristic of the area with orchards surrounding the courtyard and a refreshing pool overlooking the views.

In order to protect the lemons, grapes are grown on top of them in a typical local technique which has been maintained since they were planted.

The gulf of Naples and the Bay of Sorrento have been celebrated over the years by  poets, writers and travelers and for centuries was part of the “grand tour” and is the gateway to the Amalfi coast and a good jumping off point for exploring  the vast archeological sites of Pompeii and the surrounding countryside.

Its mild climate makes it a year round destination with only part of the hotels, shops and restaurants closing down from the beginning of January through the beginning of March.

The nearby mountain top town of Ravello has loads of old world charm with grand villas and gardens dotting the hillsides and in the summer months, the famed Ravello Arts Festival. Home to mythical legends and ancient archeological history, Punta Campanella on the Sorrentine Peninsula along the Gulf of Naples is the lands end point and it was here in Homer’s epic that Ulysses met the Sirens and the Greeks later built a temple in honor of Athens. Casa 1413, Ullastret, Costa Brava, Spain

0
0

The small village of Ullastret in the Girona province is a quiet town with an identity that has lasted centuries, and this holiday home in Catalonia was developed as a coherent, deferent, and unique response to its surroundings.

As with much of the medieval structures in town, the site was encircled by ancient stone walls marking the boundaries of the original estate, but were subsequently dismantled and moved slightly during restoration, with the walls now functioning as the home’s exterior perimeter.

Designed by Catalan based firm, Harquitectes, the home is composed of interrelated outward facing spaces that paradoxically create a private inwardly focused habitat that faces the gardens and pool and remains sheltered from the street.

Illuminated and warmed by large bi-folding windows that run the length of the structure, the linear spaces create a sequence of corridors dividing the living room, kitchen and dining areas on one end, and the private en suite sleeping spaces at the farthest end.

Composed entirely of polished and raw concrete, the interiors nevertheless have a sense of lightness and have been maximized for functionality and social interaction. A sparse selection of neutral, modern furnishings and an absence of superfluous decor allow the architecture the spotlight.

The interior gardens are grassy and peaceful with a central pool and areas for private relaxation that tie it all together.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi throughout, cable TV, underfloor heating, kitchen and bath amenities, laundry facilities, private parking. Bikes for guests use.

AROUND

The small medieval village of Ullastret along the Costa Brava is located less than an hour from Girona and is encompassed by many well-preserved stone structures and fortifications similar to the walls of the house. Outside of the sheltered narrow streets is the town’s Gothic Llotja Square and the remarkable ancient Iberian settlements – one of the most important archaeological sites of the Iberian period in Catalonia.

The Costa Brava is bordered to the north by the the beautiful and protected Garrotxa region and to the south by the Gavarres national park, surrounded by some of Catalonia’s most breathtaking natural and coastal beauty. Don’t miss El Canadell, a hidden gem of a beach in the picturesque fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell.

A small medieval city and university town with fabulous Catalonian restaurants, shops, bars and cafes, historic Girona sits along the River Onyar where the walled Old Quarter (Barri Vell) features the ancient Roman rampart fragments of the Vella fortress woven through the tiny streets and alleyways.

The area is also home to the authentic and picturesque medieval towns of  Besalu, Figueres (home of surrealist painter Salvador Dali), Santa Pau, Castellfollit de la Roca, Olot and Alta, all in less than an hour’s drive. Going back over two thousand years, the ancient Roman Road route is a fascinating drive through the region.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Spring through Fall although the mild winter months can also be pleasant.

Cementina Tile

0
0

Villa Filottrano in Marche, Italy has been restored using traditional local and recycled materials with colorful and authentic Cementina tile work. Cementina is a glazed porcelain stoneware with a surface that recreates the aspect of hand-trowelled cement.

Massimiliano Bruni and his wife purchased the tiles in Colle Sannita in the province of Benevento, 80km from Naples, from a second-hand dealer. They reused the old tiles to create new combinations of ‘three-dimensional’ rugs, bathroom walls, beautiful tables in the living area and our favorite, this stunning kitchen island, an artwork on its own.

Massimiliano shares: “My wife had the idea of the kitchen island. She has Neapolitan origins and a great passion for cooking. On our weekends we love to discover vintage furniture stores or antique markets, and it was during one of these weekends that we ventured into a second-hand dealer that exhibited beautiful old tiles! Since that time we have not stopped imagining them in our kitchen in the Marche.”

The ancient tiles have become a central theme of the restoration, having been used in so many ways. We love the colorful tile and the unique mix of old and new materials that lend it a calm sense of modern style.

Conversation with George Kolliopoulos

New to our collection is the Rhodes Monocabin, a miniature home in Ialysos on the Greek island of Rhodes, created by Milanese design studio Mandalaki. It’s a really cool modular cabin, conceived as a “livable design object” and intended to blend organically with the natural world around it. Or any environment for that matter — the Monocabin is a neutral space that can be placed anywhere. And plans are afoot to make that happen.

Mandalaki was co-founded by George Kolliopoulos, Enrico De Lotto and Giovanni Senin (pictured above, from left to right), and we reached out to them to find out more about what they do. It turns out they design all kinds of functional objets d’art, including the Halo Lamp and the Myeki Ring, which we’ve just added to our Marketplace. The Monocabin is also host to a really interesting art residency program, and serves as a mini gallery space. Bring Me Sun, an art piece inspired by the Colossus of Rhodes, is also available in the store.

How many Monocabins are there?

George Kolliopoulos: “So far, only one. Monocabin is our prototype. We didn’t expect to receive so much great feedback and interest in it. We have decided to expand the project and are working on some new exciting updates. In fact, we hope to see many Monocabins around the world in the years to come. We are also now accepting orders so if you are interested, do not hesitate to contact us!”

Why did you choose Rhodes as the location?

GK: “I was born and raised in Rhodes. Actually, Monocabin is in the exact neighborhood I grew up in. I wanted to pay tribute to my island by making the starting point of this project in that particular location. It was also an opportunity to share with my guests all the hidden gems around Rhodes. It is an amazing island with breathtaking nature as well as a long history and rich culture. I knew that Rhodes could satisfy any desire.”

Mandalaki Mandalaki Mandalaki Mandalaki

What’s a “livable design object”?

GK: “We wanted to design a house crafted around the look and function of what a person actually needs during their holidays. It ended up being a 28 m2 space. This dimension was created as we learned more about what a person needs for the perfect summer getaway. Then the crafting was conceived around concrete panels with a degree of modularity. The approach was all about using a process of industrial design more than an architectural one.”

Which Mandalaki designs are featured within the house?

GK: “As Monocabin is designed by our studio Mandalaki, we also wanted to feature objects within the house so the guest can have a total experience of our design philosophy. You can find for example the Myeki Ring, and soon the Halo lamp.

Halo lamp aims to combine art with technology: the light is no longer digitally created by an RGB LED that mixes the colors to obtain the chromatic effect, but rather it is produced by an analogic optical decomposition. Its function is different from that of a standard lamp. We wanted to create a dream effect by designing a metaphysical space that the user must contemplate. It’s currently on display at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery in Milan, and will soon travel to Sardinia.

Mandalaki Mandalaki Mandalaki

Myeki Ring is neither a smartphone charger nor a lamp. It is a new category of product designed to enrich and improve the user experience in a world of increasingly present electronic devices. The source of energy when placed in a domestic environment becomes a piece of furniture. With its bright lines, its presence is marked with softness and elegance in order to assist the user in finding the power source. A new way to integrate the electricity in a domestic device.”

Mandalaki Mandalaki Mandalaki

Can you tell us about your artist residency program?

GK: “The artist residency program is a project taught in collaboration with Viviane Yazdani, co-creator of Monocabin. It is connected with the idea of giving the space a reason for being beyond a fully functional holiday house. As Rhodes is a summer destination, we wanted Monocabin to be kept alive in low season, so we decided to make it a working place for artists.

“The artists and designers in residence are asked to work on a project proposal around the heritage of Rhodes. To support their work, limited-edition pieces are sold in the summer time. It actually created a new dimension for Monocabin to become not only an art residency but a habitable art gallery where our guests can actually find unique, handcrafted, high-quality pieces that represent the story of the island and at the same time an actual piece of the house.”

When you travel, what do you look for?

GK: “As our design studio is based in Milan, the capital of design, I have to say that my daily life is connected with amazing design. So when I travel for leisure, I try to go back to basics and connect as much as I can with nature. In fact, nature is the best designer of all.”

The Louie, New Orleans, Louisiana

Situated on the top two floors of a late 19th century “shotgun” house, this vacation rental in New Orleans has a history as evocative and varied as the many cultures that ended up here.

Built in 1890, the townhouse was discovered and restored by a couple whose frequent visits to the city ultimately lured them in. A fixture since the early 19th century, the shotgun houses developed back then were modest, understated homes and a big part of New Orlean’s legacy.

Through careful restoration, the owners sought to create a thoughtfully designed space that brings guests closer to the most authentic, local version of the city.

A bright and airy space, the apartment retains its historic charm and character, highlighted by original features and fixtures including the fireplaces (although they aren’t operational), weathered whitewashed wood and even the original antique stove in the kitchen.

The first floor houses the sitting and dining room as well as the kitchen and a separate den with sofa bed and a private deck. Upstairs are two double bedrooms with a full bath.

Decor includes a mix of 20th century vintage pieces and antiques that pay homage to the city’s heritage including chairs rescued from a Jazz bar, with contemporary design elements that have a more modern sensibility.

There’s a (rare) private backyard shared with the owners and a sense of solitude in a space that is all about relaxation and a sense of place.

Nestled into a private desert oasis of native cacti and palm trees and hidden behind distinctive block walls, this classic holiday home in Palm Springs is a private vintage hideaway. Meticulously updated to preserve it’s classic mid-century beauty, the property now features the best of the historic architecture with luxurious modern amenities and a reverence for architect William Krisel’s original design.

Originally designed and built by the Alexander company in 1958 as a winter cabin getaway, the current owners researched the original renderings of the house and grounds for updates, choosing saturated slate color wash on the exteriors, adding drama to the long, low silhouette.

The all in one layout includes the sitting room with expansive walls of glass, polished concrete floors and high vaulted ceilings anchored by a stacked brick fireplace at the far end. A bright and modern space, the interiors are nevertheless warm and inviting with a calm sophistication and subtle updates. The remodeled kitchen with eat-in dining island has been refinished and customized with appliances cleverly disguised as cabinets in Scandinavian plywood.

Design features combine custom built-ins and mid-century reproduction furniture and lighting including Serge Moulle, Tom Dixon & Arne Jacobson lighting, Eames chairs and Daybed sofa, Nelson bench and a Saarinen Womb Chair.

The design allows the living space inside to blend seamlessly with the gardens blurring the boundaries and providing stunning views of the San Jacinto mountains.

The en suite master bedroom overlooks the pool and mountains with private access to the gardens. There is an additional double bedroom with access to its own private cactus garden and a twin room with floor to ceiling windows and a secret cactus garden.

The walled yard (with a striking original mural by Chicago based Struggle Inc) and outdoor living spaces feature a sparkling pool, Bocce court, and outdoor dining and lounge areas perfect for entertaining with stunning mountain views rising from the West.

A chic and expressive home, this is the spot to enjoy fun in the sun in a vintage classic.

Recalling the splendor of a golden age in Lisbon’s history, this breathtaking 18th century palace is set within a row of historic residences in Belem just minutes from the river’s edge and the city center.

Built at the tail end of Age of Discoveries, the area is one of the most evocative and elegant neighborhoods favored by the aristocracy.

Following major renovations in 1845 (the date can be seen engraved on the facade’s main balcony), the villa fell into a long period of decline and neglect until the present owners returned it to its former glory with a meticulous restoration, preserving the original centuries-old features with fine handcrafted materials and finishes.

The entire facade of the building is adorned with classic azulejos tiles, and each room reveals the history of the building with opulent frescoes and beautifully preserved detail. Set on two levels, the interiors are typical of the era, with soaring ceilings and stately oversized rooms that all have access to the back garden. The main floor includes a great room with a fireplace, a media room and a beautiful wood paneled library. There are five bedrooms here (four en suite) and a sleek, state of the art kitchen with adjacent dining room. There are two additional bedrooms and a games room on the ground floor with room for up to fourteen guests.

Designed with a striking combination of old world elegance and modern sensibilities, the historic aspects of the house are offset by an eclectic, minimalist pairing of contemporary art and furnishings mixed with antiques that highlight Lisbon’s aristocratic past.

The spacious and grassy courtyard is a rarity in the city, with room for kids to play and friends and family to dine al fresco.

Ideally suited for large families or groups, the villa immerses you into the grandeur of this amazing city and is an evocative and classic remnant of a vibrant time and place in history.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Daily housekeeping included (4 hrs.), private chef available on request, childcare available on request. Wifi throughout, satellite cable TV and DVD player, kitchen and bath amenities, laundry facilities.

Children’s equipment available including: travel crib, high chair and toys, books and DVDs. Parking very close, but not at the property itself.

AROUND

Located near the banks of the Tagus in the leafy and elegant Belem neighborhood, the villa is ten minutes from Lisbon’s city center, Jeronimos Monastery and most of the city’s museums as well as it’s signature tower. Set high on a ridge overlooking the salt lakes below, the property once extended as far as the shores of what is now Jan Thiel bay and, during the 1920’s was developed as one of the first resorts on the island.
