Flanked by hills overlooking the sea, and immersed in an expanse of ancient olive trees, this holiday home in Italy’s composition is contemporary but with a nod to its rustic surroundings.

Designed to be understated but with a sense of place that mimics the nearby white town of Ostuni, architect Luca Zanaroli has crafted a modern homage to the ancient coastal architecture and way of life that has existed here for centuries.

The whitewashed monolithic forms are unadorned, with simple clean lines composed of stone, concrete, wood and glass.

Entering through the central living space, the large bay windows open onto the terraces with a view of the sea and countryside. The interiors are spacious but intimate, with bright but neutral earth tones and a fluid indoor outdoor flow. Expansive and airy, the living areas make the best use of the natural light and views.

The fully equipped kitchen has Corten steel paneling, tinted cement worktops, built-in olive wood chopping boards, state-of-the-art appliances with access to an outdoor dining area. On both sides of the central space, two large Corten steel sliding doors lead to the three en suite bedrooms. Each room opens onto its own terrace, with panoramic views on the upper floor that can be reached by an enclosed staircase.

The owners added Roger Capron tables, a Nicola Fasano dining set, Baumann armchairs, Davide Groppi lamps, La Liste Tunisienne pieces and Scandinavian and Italian furniture mixed with handcrafts from local antique dealers.

Several terrace spaces encircle the multi-leveled grounds, with two external showers. The outdoor dining area is sheltered from the sun and features a kitchen and large barbecue for al fresco dining.

The salt water pool has magnificent views with cement steps that lead up to a remarkable ancient olive wood.

The land surrounding the house has been kept wild and natural with native landscaping groves that frame the pool and outdoor living areas.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Weekly housekeeping included with daily housekeeping on request. Wifi throughout, Bluetooth sound system, kitchen and bath amenities, laundry facilities, safe, parking for up to four cars.

Let’s take a moment to express our love for adjustable shelves — an invention perfectly adapted to the real-life problem of putting stuff away. Then there are the clesks of Krisel Glass Cabin, which are the ingenious confection of owner Jared Eberhardt. Clesks are closet-desks, in essence cheerfully adjustable shelves that offer a place to hang whatever needs hanging — plus a desk.

The idea behind this creation would make William Krisel, the original architect of the glass cabin, rather proud. As Krisel Glass Cabin was designed as a weekend retreat, the closets were just going to sit empty most of the time. Jared felt that clesks would be a better use of the space.

In terms of inspiration for design and materials, he shares, “This house was designed as a modest winter cabin. Krisel used inexpensive materials like plywood and peg board, in new and innovative ways to get the modernist look on a budget. For example, the bathrooms and kitchens had plywood cabinets with sliding pegboard doors, very few of which made it through the decades of heavy use (and ill-conceived renovations). It’s very rare to see the originals still in use— they just weren’t very durable. This design was sort of an extra durable replacement and way to pay homage to the home’s past.” For the clesks, Jared used oversized pegboards made out of 1” thick ACX plywood instead of the original 1/4” Masonite.

Jared says it’s one of the easiest shelves he’s made, but we’re pretty sure that speaks mainly in favor of his carpentry skills. The biggest challenge was having to drill perfectly straight holes through the 1” thick plywood. He explains, “Working with soft woods is always a challenge because they splinter, but the look of the grain is so nice, it’s worth the extra effort.”

We love this anecdote that perfectly demonstrates Jared’s commitment to the cause: “People don’t generally use plywood as finished furniture, so the lumber yards aren’t used to having someone dig through an entire stack to find the pieces with the best grain. Each sheet weighs about 75 pounds, and after the forklift guy realized I wanted to see all of them he politely excused himself so I had to go it alone, stacking and unstacking at least 50 sheets to get what I wanted.”

Overlooking the Vechte river with private access to its waterfront, this modern cabin rental in the Netherlands is located in the country’s central eastern region of forested woodlands and meadows.

The second in a series of innovative pre-fab home concepts, owners and designers Arno Schuurs and Paulien van Noort of the Netherlands based Qoncepts agency created the cabin as a model for innovative holiday homes.

Constructed in two prefabricated sections off site, the parts were transported to and installed on site using an innovative and simple screw foundation technique placing the structure above ground level. Using beautiful, all natural and low maintenance materials including untreated Oregon Pine planks for the facade, oak fishbone flooring, concrete and raw steel, the home is a modern homage to the rustic country cabin.

The city’s leafy Polanco neighborhood is a tranquil residential zone among the bustle and is one of the most sought after, with green park land, delicious cantinas and cafes along the ancient canals.

Densely populated and bustling with colorful chaotic energy, Mexico City is the high-altitude capital of the country and the hub of culture, history and spiritual identity that the rest of the country orbits around.

A cultural renaissance of sorts has helped the city rise above the country’s sometimes misinterpreted reputation with a lively sense of renewal and possibility. Perched on a rugged, natural plateau with far-away vistas of Mount Orford and the valley below, this holiday home in Quebec is in perfect symbiosis with its natural environment.

A strikingly bold silhouette modeled on the typical rural barn, the house juts out over the steep mountainside that slopes below.

Working with Montreal based architectural firm Nature Humaine to translate the site’s rugged environment, the firm scrutinized the views, the light and the changing seasons to translate and synthesize it all into shapes, sequences, materials, and character in a sensitive and balanced design.

Characterized by two large stacked rectangles, the wooden clad upper floor is anchored into the mountain with a cantilevered concrete foundation with a gabled roofed rising high above the terrain, giving the sensation that the house is floating among the trees.

The upper living spaces offer sweeping views that change with the seasons from long horizontal strip windows. Anchored by a polished steel fireplace, the living room and dining area flow towards the kitchen carved out of a central black dividing wall separating the spaces from the en suite master bedroom. There’s an additional double bedroom downstairs with room for four guests total.

Clad in black from the outside, the interiors are a cool, minimalist palette of slate grays, warm wood and dramatic black accents that add drama and sophistication.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi throughout, satellite cable TV, laundry facilities, kitchen and bath amenities, private garaged parking.

AROUND
