Located in the hills of Silver Lake with spectacular views of Los Feliz, the Hollywood sign, and Griffith Observatory, this holiday home in Los Angeles is unassuming from the street.

Passing through the terraced cactus garden, upon entry, guests are often taken aback by the grand foyer. The long corridor, with infinity mirrors and built in displays was designed to be used as an art gallery, and features a distinctive art deco flair—a style unusual and rare to find in a Schindler. Synonymous with old 1920s and 30s Hollywood glamour, the penthouse feels like being in a by-gone era.

The enclosed foyer opens into the grand, ballroom-esque living room, providing each guest with the “Space Architecture” experience that Schindler was known for, in which contraction and expansion is utilized in the design of a space. The ceiling becomes much higher and the eye gravitates towards the head on panels of windows with panoramic views. Schindler was a master of window placement and maximizing the amount of natural light.

The original features in the apartment remain intact, including Douglas Fir floors, the undulating old growth Redwood ceiling in wide planks, and custom shelving with an art deco motif.

The kitchen and dining nook are on one side of the apartment, and the bedroom, study, and one and half bathrooms on the other side — separated by the long foyer and living room. In the living room, there is the original working fireplace and tile, along with custom made sofa, end tables and a credenza based on original designs by Schindler. Fun fact: one of the credenzas houses a discretely hidden remote controlled flat screen. Furnishings and decor are bespoke and largely one of a kind pieces, and where possible, made by local artists.

A secret door leads from the living room into the master bedroom and bathroom, with the bed made from cathedral plywood in keeping with the art deco motif. The light filled study can be accessed either through the living room or bedroom and contains a Schindler designed ladder that, back in the day, was used to access the sleeping porches on the roof.

The long balcony spans between the kitchen and the study overlooking the LA basin.
