Hatari: Shu’mata Camp and Hatari Lodge, Amboseli, Tanzania

Situated directly under the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Shu’mata is a luxurious and rugged retreat. A permanent camp comprised of a handful of Hemingway-style tents, it is situated on a hill in the Masai tribal lands bordering Amboselli National Park.

Its tents were designed and positioned to capture the stunning landscape with 360-degree views of the savannah and Kilimanjaro. Positioned in a line along the ridge, there are a total of six tents that form the unique and adventurous compound. Each of the tents is self contained and includes a full bath and private veranda with room for four. With a sophisticated approach to a traditional safari camp, the interiors and decor have all been designed as a tribute to the bygone era, and are chic and colorful.

Meanwhile, the Hatari Lodge is a former farm that was once the setting for Howard Hawks’ film Hatari! Today it’s a luxury bush lodge located in woodlands on the edge of the Momella meadow and adjacent to the vast Arusha National Park. The lodge delivers legendary safari spirit with an unexpectedly retro modern design aesthetic.

A commitment to health and conservation prevails at both properties, most notably in the dining, which fuses locally-sourced foods with gourmet recipes. It is also showcased in the carefully-chosen experiences that are available to guests. The opportunity to see Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro up close adds a new layer of value for anyone who desires to see the best of Tanzania.

Hatari is independently owned and is the result of a deep understanding of its neighboring landscapes and inhabitants. The rooms and facilities have personalities that reveal secrets about regional art forms, and the experience is designed to allow guests to “dwell poetically”.

The adventure of a lifetime awaits you in Tanzania in a unique and idyllic setting at a distinctive retreat from where you can explore wild and beautiful Africa.
