HISTORY AND CHARACTER COALESCE IN COASTAL PARADISE

Dubbed “the last paradise of the Mediterranean”, part of the appeal of this tiny Balearic Island is that it doesn’t have its own airport. That it’s a 35-minute ferry ride from its sparklier bigger sister, Ibiza, attracts a more intrepid traveler looking to escape those peak summer crowds.

Still covered in ancient ruins, dirt roads and piney groves from its early days, it has long attracted a hippie spirit. Joni Mitchell wrote her 1971 album Blue here, and Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley all flocked to Formentera around the same time.

This is a place to vacillate between the beaches and coves and walking and biking trails, intermittently indulging in long meals at the local family-run seafood shacks by day and more elegant, chef-driven fare by night. The perfect finish to any evening is a digestif of the local anise-based spirit, hierbas. Sleep in, and repeat.
