In the middle of an oak forest overlooking Lake Trasimeno and the medieval town of Preggio across the valley, this luxury villa in Umbria is nestled into the mountainside in an area designated by the EU as a “Nature 2000” destination of significant heritage value. Newly designed by Danish owners – interior design journalist Lise Septimius Krogh and photographer Kristian Septimius Krogh – the duo have created a modern holiday villa modeled on the rural Umbrian traditions of the past. Environmentally designed with rainwater recycling systems, solar heating and sustainable building practices, the villa combines modern Scandinavian style with Italian elegance and eco-consciousness.

The corner living room features two glass walls with large sliding doors that open out to a terrace with stunning views. The adjacent kitchen and dining area feature double height ceilings and a fireplace with room for eight. Bright and airy, the interiors are awash in natural light and decorated in a sharp monochromatic palette and minimalist rustic style. You’ll spy several interesting custom pieces designed by the owners as well as an eclectic selection of modern classics, antiques and a striking art collection. Upstairs there are four double bedrooms and two shared baths that can accommodate eight guests as well as an office.

The property is designed for entertaining al fresco with a large patio and dining areas shaded by oak trees, and gardens that blend into the forest for exploring or hanging out in the hammocks. One level above is the saltwater pool with a dark green floor reminiscent of a forest lake where you can take a refreshing dip with views across Umbria.

The nearby medieval town of Preggio is on the way west to Lake Trasimeno in the border regions shared by Tuscany. Surrounded by olive groves woods and the fortified medieval towns of Castiglione del Lago and Passignano, there’s also a trio of islands to explore – Maggiore, Minore and Polvese. The stunning hilltop capital city of Perugia with it’s beautiful historic center is a thirty five minute drive and is also a contemporary university town with great nightlife and youthful energy. The Etruscan era town Umbertide is thirty minutes east at the confluence of the Reggia and Tiber rivers and the neighboring UNESCO site of Val d’Orcia with the remarkable hilltop village of Montepulciano and nearby Pienza are a ninety minute drive west.
