The Bracy House, Cape Neddick, Maine

Located on almost two wooded acres a quarter mile from the Atlantic Ocean, this carefully restored 19th century home appears from the outside as it might have over a hundred years ago. Characteristic of much of the local architecture of coastal Maine and New England, the clapboard and shingle construction and muted greys of the exteriors give way to bright and spacious modern interiors.

Built in 1890 by local Maine resident Horace Bracy, the house remained in the Bracy family for generations all the way until 2015 when it was discovered and restored by an architect and textile company founder. With an affinity for the north Atlantic coast and contemporary Scandinavian design, the new owners set to work on extensive renovations that have preserved the history and charm of the house. Removing a few dated aspects to reveal the original bones, wood floors and raw potential, both the interiors and original porch were opened up and transformed to accommodate modern technology without sacrificing the house’s identity. Over the years, additional bedrooms and a separate upstairs apartment were added which have now been divided into two self contained units with two bedrooms and baths.

With furnishings and objects from the likes of BluDot, Bob’s Your Uncle, HAY, Heath Ceramics, Hem, Knoll, Marimekko, Muuto, Paper Collective, and Vitra sourced from travels through Berlin, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Reykjavik, the interiors are decidedly contemporary and were inspired by Scandinavia’s similarities to the southern coast of Maine.

Quietly stylish and understated, this vacation home rental in Maine sticks to the New England values of graceful living and smart modern design.

AROUND

Maine’s picturesque coastal towns of Kittery, the Yorks, Ogunquit, the Kennebunks, and Old Orchard Beach are home to historic villages, and kitchy seaside shops as well as miles of sandy beaches sheltered along the rocky coastline of the North Atlantic. The wooded village of Cape Neddick is ten miles from York center which includes the summer resort harbor with its grand Victorian mansions and a lovely sandy beach. Settled in 1624, it’s the first English city chartered in North America and steeped in living history with a small downtown area populated with impeccably maintained historic buildings. Cape Neddick’s peninsula extends into the sea with four of the best beaches of Long Sands, Short Sands, York Harbor and Cape Neddick within a short drive or bike ride from the house. You’re two miles from the 19th century fishing village and artist colony of Ogunquit where the tidewater basin is filled with colorful sailing dories and weathered fishing shacks, shops, galleries, and restaurants. Named America’s Best Coastal Small Town in USA Today, Orgunquit’s nearby coastal path runs along craggy cliffs of the Atlantic to the top rated 3½-mile stretch of sandy beach and grassy dunes.
