Mountain Lodge, Dolomites, Italy

This 16th-century hunting lodge in the Dolomites has won several awards, most notably Italy’s Best Ski Chalet in the World Ski Awards for 2013 through 2015. And it’s easy to see why.

A stunning location, overlooking the Val Pusteria, certainly helps, but we really like how the beautiful, traditional exteriors have been preserved – making this a lovely destination both when it’s covered in snow, and when the summer sun is shining brightly on the surrounding meadows.

Interiors manage to combine an old-fashioned charm with elegant modern lines. We love the white entrance rooms with their curved, vaulted ceilings, little tunnels, nooks and alcoves, as well as the elegant recessed fireplace, the wrought-iron candelabras and other details. Abundant use of wood for walls, ceilings and floors give the house a remarkably cosy feel.

The property has four bedrooms – two with double bed and en-suite bathroom, one with a double, and a final room with two really fun wooden bunk beds.

The house also has a fabulously luxurious indoor relaxation area with Finnish sauna, Turkish bath (with chromotherapy), a whirlpool, and experience shower and stereo. There is also an outdoor panoramic whirpool and lounge.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

A day room on the ground floor has wifi, DVD, satellite TV, an iPod docking station and kids’ games. A tea room has a stereo, TV and a small library. Bathrooms have Trehs cosmetics, hairdryers, bathrobes and slippers. Beds have linen sheets, hypoallergenic down pillows and goose-down duvets.

The wine cellar is stocked with more than 1,500 bottles of the best Alto Adige wines, and there is a ski room with heated ski-boot rack. There is a telephone and a safe. High chairs, cots and safety seats are available.

Snow tires are legally required in winter. Drivers without them may leave their cars at the outdoor public parking area in the village of Mantana, or at a recommended garage. There is also a private helipad.

AROUND

Winter experiences on offer include chopping wood in the forest, woodcarving, moonlight snowshoeing and sledding, cross-country skiing through Fanes Nature Park, Plan de Corones and the Anterselva Valley, alpine skiing at Plan de Corones, ski and snowboard lessons, and winter paragliding.

In spring and summer, choose from mushroom and berry picking, meditation, cooking classes, wine and cheese tasting, mountain hikes, road biking, rafting, paragliding and tree climbing. Wellness packages are also available.

And to top it all, there is an 18-hole private golf course, designed by Ron Kirby and endorsed by Jack Nicklaus, set into the steep slopes surrounding the lodge.
