This house is not only in a great location at East Preston on the West Sussex seafront, but it’s also historically fascinating. Designed by architect Patrick Gwynne for his quantity surveyor Ken Monk, it was completed in 1970, is the only holiday home he made, and remains one of his least-altered works.
Gwynne is best known for his post-war modernist designs, including the Homewood in Esher and the Dell Restaurant in London’s Hyde Park. This structure was created in an hourglass shape with a bottleneck, and its roof echoes its unusual curved walls, sliding from front to back like a wave. Designed to take advantage of its location, its main living areas are on the upper floor, allowing for great sea views.
The property consists of a two-story building and a small pool house, located in the expansive gardens by the large outdoor pool. The upper level living room is flooded with light, and the decor is faithful to the era in which the house was built. We particularly like the orange kitchen tiles, the mid-century furnishings and the fantastic curved staircase.
There are five bedrooms, all on the lower level, and four bathrooms. The living, dining and kitchen areas are all upstairs.
This is a really unique holiday letting in the UK, great for getting to know West Sussex in the summer and off-peak.

The seaside town of Littlehampton is just a few minutes’ drive down the coast and has a great sandy beach, with a small fairground and the highly-recommended East Beach Cafe, great for Sunday brunch. Slightly farther afield is Brighton (30-40 minutes drive), with its boardwalk cafes, antique shops, amusement arcades and fairground rides.
