This cabin rental in Germany sits in an overgrown stone quarry, overlooking the Elbandsteingebirge mountains, near the border with the Czech Republic. Built on the foundations of an old barn by architect Thomas Heinle, it’s part of a six-hectare property, adjacent to a larger vacation rental.
The cabin is a beautifully simple wooden box in a wild and wonderful location. Guests reach the cabin via a path that runs along the cliff face and then by a stone staircase.
A sliding glass door opens into an elegant but uncomplicated studio space. The walls and celiing are bare wood, the floors are concrete, and large windows bring the natural environment inside. Look one way and there’s nothing but trees. Look the other, and an old stone wall appears to join you in the room.
The space is made up of an open kitchen, a living area with Danish wood-burning stove, and a dining table. There is a separate bathroom, on top of which is the bedroom – on a mezzanine level, 3.5m above the living room and reached by ladder. Like the rest of the cabin, it’s very simple, with tatami mats and a futon.
Outside in the garden, there’s a wooden barrel used for summer bathing, and a sauna is planned for 2017.
This is a great cabin rental in Germany for a couple. It can be rented with the larger house on the same property, which sleeps eight guests.

The cabin is located south of Dresden and north of Prague, and both cultural centers are easily reached by train or car. It is surrounded in nature, and it overlooks the Elbandsteingebirge (Elbe Sandstone Mountains), which are part of the Nationalpark Sächsische Schweiz, also known as Saxon Switzerland or Bohemian Switzerland. The Park offers abundant opportunities for hiking and climbing.
