This traditional stone house was originally built in 1910 as a commercial station transporting local products like olives, oil and salt from Crete to the Peloponnese, Kythera and mainland Greece.
It was rebuilt in 2016 and given a cool modern makeover, without losing its original charm. We love the use of stone in the exterior walls, furnishings and staircase, that matches the pebbles of the adjacent beach, and the fantastic terrace with its large pool, lounge chairs, dining table, outdoor kitchen and barbeque. The roof of the house also serves of as a stargazing terrace – with its comfortable pillows and great views, it is the place to be after sunset.
Warm, earthy tones and raw, natural materials bring the property back to its roots – but it also has a bright, playful feel. The living room is flooded with natural light, and its large windows open directly onto the terrace, creating a great open-plan feel. Fun features include the Smeg appliances in the indoor kitchen, and the quirky bathroom sinks with their combination of modern faucets and vintage handles.
The property sits in 1.5 acres of land and is only 30 meters from the seashore. A great beach house rental in Greece for a couple, it can sleep two with one small child on the living-room sofa.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
The house has two kitchens – one inside and one outside. There is an outdoor shower, and pool towels are provided. Additional amenities include air conditioning, dishwasher, washing machine, hairdryer, Nespresso maker, DVD player, docking station and satellite TV. A baby cot and seat are available. Housekeeping is provided three times a week. Grocery deliveries, food deliveries, a private chef and cooking classes can be arranged.
AROUND
The house is located on the west coast of Crete, 80km west of the island’s second largest city, Chania. It’s a region with quiet, scattered coves, striking mountains and unspoilt villages. It has beautiful sandy beaches, including Balos and Elafonisi, which have been ranked among the top 10 beaches in Europe by Tripadvisor users.
Other recommendations in the region include fishings trips, and traditional cuisine in small local taverns, wine and the Cretan drink tsikoudia. Destinations worth the drive include Chania (with its charming Old Town), the Samaria Gorge and the village of Ayía Rouméli at its far end, and the castle of Frangokástello.
