Riad Hotel, Marrakech, Morocco

This luxury boutique hotel in Marrakech has an effortlessly indulgent feel. A traditional Moroccan riad (or mansion) that’s been converted into seven rooms and suites, it’s a little oasis for design lovers, that offers a unique combination of modern luxury and traditional design.

We love the zelliges or mosaic tilles that cover the floors and bathrooms, the delicately arched doorways, the carved wooden panels, the shuttered windows, the heavy drapes, the splashes of colorful fabric, and the beautiful found objects.

But mostly, we love the hotel’s absolute commitment to relaxation – in the intricately tiled courtyard, with its plunge pool and outdoor mattresses, and the rooftop terrace that overlooks Marrakech’s medina, offering views as far as the snow-capped Atlas mountains. There’s also an interior dining room with a lounge and fireplace, books and toys. An in-house chef offers up freshly-made local dishes like tajine chicken and candied lemons, royal couscous and harira soup, with green mint tea available all day long.

There are seven separate rooms and suites, all designed in typical Moorish style and overlooking the courtyard. They can be rented individually or together, and the property can accommodate events like birthdays, bachelorette parties, retreats and workshops.

This property is located in the heart of the old fortified city, or medina. Visitors to the city are encouraged to visit its labyrinthine souks – with cubicles selling everything from carpets and spices to kaftans and cooked snails. Green spaces nearby include La Mamounia and the Jardin Majorelle (with its stunning Museum of Islamic Art).
