Located directly in front of the 16th century São João Batista church on the Quadrado, this vacation home rental in Brazil is one in a complex of unique homes designed by fashion designer Wilbert Das. The property was featured in Elle Decor and is among the area’s most acclaimed private residences.

Collaborating closely with local artisans using traditional techniques, Das’ passion for the culture and lifestyle is evident throughout, with handcrafted details, reclaimed native wood and authentic design. The casa makes an immediate impact with a striking mix of bright tropical colors set against soft pastels that form a cheerful backdrop for an inspired and authentic Bahian experience. The interiors are bright and spacious with high ceilings and large windows that frame the tranquil scenes of Quadrado life. There’s a fully equipped eat in kitchen and two bright and dreamy bedrooms that can accommodate up to four guests one of which is inspired by the African painted houses of Burkino Faso.

Artworks throughout include stunning paintings by Marcelo Cipis, Pato Rammsy, and Caio Pataxó (a native Indian painter working under tutelage of Wilbert Das), vintage tapestries from Kennedy Bahia, Indian silk saris, and antique German school posters, as well as photography by Melanie Dunea. The one-of-a-kind furnishings, decor and lighting were contributed by talents such as Marcantonio Raimondi Malerba, Rodrigo Almeida, Lucas Simoes, Mauro Zolin, and Peter Kempkens.

The indoor/outdoor areas take advantage of the breezy sub-tropical Bahian lifestyle – with sofas and hammocks for lounging, an open-air shower and vintage bathtub surrounded by flowering gardens, and a four-person outdoor hot tub spa. There are two al fresco dining areas, one directly on the Quadrado under the shade of a towering amendoeira tree planted 35-years ago by Vegetal and his artist friends.

Designed with a natural sense of belonging and laid back glamour, the house celebrates the soul and sensibilities of the Bahian culture in a visually stimulating, avant-garde environment and relaxed tropical comfort, in a perfect homage to the best of old and new Trancoso.

AROUND

The charming and rustic town of Trancoso sits along the southern region of the Atlantic coast of Bahia along beautiful stretches of unspoiled shoreline. A former laid back hippy destination, the town is attracting a more jet set crowd of late but remains a product of its past. From the UNESCO designated Quadrado, to the cobble stone streets and candy colored houses, this bluff side village hums along at a dreamy pace. The nearby beaches of Praia do Espelho, Praia dos Nativos, Rio da Barra are to the north and Rio Verde, Itaquema and Ponta de Itapororoca are to the south. Further North is the historic town of Arraial D’Ajuda in the district of Porto Seguro belonging to the region known as Discovery Coast (Costa do Descobrimento), where Portuguese explorers arrived in 1500. A peaceful and unique seaside village, it’s located on a plateau overlooking the breathtaking coastline.
