The Graz Cube, Graz, Austria

Set high above the city on top of a mid-century building originally designed by architect Georg Lippert, this holiday home rental in Austria is an ingenious addition to an existing structure that is a smartly streamlined installation for the modern traveler. Just steps from the central train station, the Kunsthaus, and a short walk from the old town, the rooftop apartment features panoramic views of the city, the iconic clock tower and Schloss Eggenberg.

Designed and installed by architect Werner Aisslinger, the prefab cubist form was created off site and placed via crane onto the roof and its sprawling sun terrace, making it the highest private suite in Graz. Completely self contained, the structure is molded into a soft organic form that nestles neatly into the wood decking. Brightly lit from all sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, the interior is a space of elegant simplicity offering a one-of-a-kind experience and absolute privacy.

Designed for two with a breezy uncomplicated style, the bespoke furnishings and innovative design are calibrated for effortless comfort and luxury without excess.

A novel idea of forward-thinking design, this unique hospitality concept is the perfect modern nest high above the city.

AROUND

Austria’s “Second City,” Graz is a UNESCO heritage destination of both medieval history and contemporary design. Organized around the historic center and old town main square of Hauptplatz, the city is a mix of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, with a maze of narrow streets and alleyways lined with restaurants and the famous shopping mile. Divided by the Mur River, the city also has an edgy futuristic and forward thinking architectural scene as well as a youthful vibe derived from the four universities which has resulted in a lively nightlife and arts scene. The funicular leads up the central Schlossberg hill to the Uhrturm clock tower which has commanded the view over the city for centuries. An hour north of the Slovenian border, it’s two hours south of Vienna and three hours east of Salzburg.
