At the foot of the rolling hills of Uckermark, Germany, is a holiday home that, from a distance, resembles a barn. But it’s far from that.
The brainchild of Berlin-based Thomas Kröger, a student of Norman Foster and Max Dudler, it was designed to draw attention to the landscape. Windows extend two-thirds of the way across the ground floor, flooding the black interiors of the ground floor with natural light. The decor is minimalist, putting the landscape centerstage.
The large living area, with sunken fireplace and open-plan kitchen, is located on the ground floor. Follow the glass corridor, and there are two sleeping alcoves, as well as a bathroom with an open 2m-long bath, with views of the countryside. Up the stairs is a white space with pale wood – two further bedrooms in triangular spaces, with beds that can be nestled to sleep six. There is also a work room with library, separated from the rest of the house through sliding doors in the rear wing.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Facilities include a dishwasher, induction hob, oven, freezer, CD player, large game collection, terrace with tables and chairs for 12 people, and deck chairs.
AROUND
The house is located on the edge of the village of Pinnow in the Uckermark. To the north it is bordered by the Schorfheide, a hilly landscape of lakes and forests. Three small lakes surround the town itself, and the largest is open to bathers.
The Prenzlauer Forest is just 500 metres away, and the Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve is located 5km to the west, in the Uckerniederung.
LOCATION
Pinnow, Gerswalde, Germany. Nearest airport: Tegel (1.5 hours drive) Berlin Schoenefeld (2 hours drive).
BEST TIME TO VISIT
