Established in 1946 as a cooperative development by a group of scientists, this holiday home in Michigan is one of only four built by Frank Lloyd Wright in what was originally intended to be a planned community of over twenty homes. Set outside of Kalamazoo an hour east of Lake Michigan, the rural seventy acre development known as The Acres has been granted historical status and placed on the National Register of Historical Places.
Often thought of as exclusive and inaccessible due to his reputation as one of the world’s architectural luminaries, Wright’s real intention was to design affordable and accessible middle class homes with an organic approach firmly rooted to the landscape and in close relationship to nature.
Discovered in a state of neglect by a couple whose expertise in research and technical design helped in the extensive restoration process, the home was brought back to its original beauty with a complete top to bottom update that carefully preserves the original design and materials.
Composed of textile block, mahogany and polished concrete, the home is laid out in Wright’s typical horizontal grid pattern with interconnecting lines and spaces, a flat roof with jutting overhangs and walls of windows. The interiors feature two main living spaces with a dining area and fully equipped modern kitchen. There are three double bedrooms, a sofa bed in the family room and two baths, with room for six guests.
Spare and almost zen like, the burnished colors and use of natural and recessed light add drama to what is already an exhilarating but elegantly understated space.
Furnished with respect for the period, there are original Frank Lloyd Wright, Bauhaus, Hans Wegner and very rare H.W. Klein #250 pieces that add to the vintage appeal.
Surrounded by verdant green forests, the home is situated on over an acre of private, park-like landscape with three terraces around the house where you can relax and enjoy nature.
A rare and strikingly preserved treasure, this exceptional home provides a unique opportunity and exclusive access to the visionary design and lasting legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright.
