While talking to Jessica Heynis, the owner, about the design and inspiration behind this Victorian house, we learned that when renovations began they wanted to achieve two things: conserve as many of the old existing Victorian features as possible while adding a big dose of funk, design and local flavor.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in the decoration of their rooms. As Jessica tells us, “We have carefully curated the work of local designers and artisans to showcase their unique talents and give visitors a taste of what the local design scene has to offer.” The headboard in the Yellow Room is definitely our favorite example.
It was created by Casamento, a manufacturing company, owned by Starry Eve Collett, that specializes in upholstered furniture using traditional methods and unique hand-stitched finishing styles. The headboard perfectly captures what Jessica and her team were trying to achieve: a locally-made product produced with quirky flair and great workmanship. “When we approached Eve about the headboard,” she says, “our brief was simple: please create an eye-catching, original headboard that would fit into a Yellow Room.”
The result is this brilliant piece that incorporates materials such as felt, leather, cotton, ribbon and careful hand-stitching. The size and color contrast will catch your eye, but the details and handwork are what make it a true work of art.
Casamento was also responsible for the headboards in the Blue and Red rooms. To check them out, learn more about 12 Hofmeyr, and stay in any of the rooms, click here.
