This three-storey vacation home rental in Portugal is made for conviviality and rest. Its insistence on comfort and serenity comes across immediately. The ground floor is an open-plan space anchored by a fully equipped kitchen and dining area. The living area is nestled three steps down into a shallow den that lends it all a certain mid-century appeal. Sweeping sheets of windows display the view outside like oversized paintings. Light and air streams to and from the higher floors through a central cut-out above the dining table, all the better to enjoy the layers of this earthy, wood-lined interior.
A quick flight up takes you to the second floor, where another living area invites you again to slow down. A wood-burning fireplace awaits, ready to keep you warm in winter. You will find a first bedroom here, with an inviting double bed, an en suite bathroom with a bathtub, and a nicely framed view. The third floor hides two other rooms, all with en suite bathrooms and their own careful views of the vines, the nearby river, and Spain in the distance.
A bit of a national treasure, in 2017 the Melgaço Alvarinho houses were awarded the national prize in Urban Rehabilitation for tourism, and Best Tourist Resort by the Building Awards in Portugal.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
The neighbouring wine cellar, or adega as it is called here, is internally connected to the house. Unlocking a door on the ground floor leads to a sensory discovery of the region’s riches and history. The space is ideal for socializing and private reservations for workshops are also possible.
When you are ready for a wander, set yourself on the trail that starts from your front door leading into the vines, branches bowing with grapes in season. A stone’s throw away is a pool to cool yourself in on the dog days of summer, discretely tucked into an existing terrace.
Vigotas house is furnished with thoughtful amenities: Air-conditioning for the warmer months, televisions in the bedrooms and the living room, free WiFi throughout, a parking space for your car and a sofa bed in the living room for larger parties.
