Tucked away at the end of a small street off the Caracasbaaiweg, this small luxury hotel in Curacao once belonged to the famous 17th century Damasco plantation and was subsequently settled by skipper and explorer Jan Thielen.

Set high on a ridge overlooking the salt lakes below, the property once extended as far as the shores of what is now Jan Thiel bay and, during the 1920’s was developed as one of the first resorts on the island.

Following a state of extended disrepair, the property was completely restored in the 1990s and the current owners, a family of hospitality entrepreneurs have turned the historic manor house and some side buildings into a colorful and atmospheric B&B.

Hidden within a private garden oasis, the property is comprised of several buildings that were part of the main estate and have now been transformed into lodgings.

The mansion, the former main residence of the plantation, is the most imposing structure on the estate and is encircled with spacious terraces that offer stunning views over the property and surrounding area.

The interiors retain their fascinating and elegant colonial style with expansive rooms and lovely decorative features including original tile work, polished wood and fixtures with well integrated modern conveniences. There is a music and games room with a piano, a richly textured double height library, large sitting rooms and six colorful guest rooms.

Behind the main house and in front of the historic cattle paddock, is a private two bedroom apartment with its own dipping pool and outdoor shower for guests who want to experience a little extra privacy.

The lush tropical gardens invite you to wander, and the large central swimming pool is a refreshing spot for lounging with a cool drink.

A gate at the far end of the property leads directly out to the Salt Lake Nature Reserve and miles of hiking trails for exploring.

AROUND

The Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao, is known for its hidden coves, golden beaches and expansive coral reefs, as well as its multifaceted culture thanks to its long, varied history and its proximity to South America. Following Spanish settlers in the 16th century, The Dutch West India Company colonized the island along with the British resulting in a culture of global influences, food and languages.

Its capital of Willemstad with its pastel-colored colonial architecture and European feel is a UNESCO World Heritage site with tight, winding streets next to the Handelskade (Merchant’s Wharf). Don’t miss the floating market with its colorful stalls of some of neighboring Venezuela’s best produce and the colorful murals in the Otrobanda and Pietermaai neighborhoods. Both Pietermaai and the city at large have become known for excellent cafes, restaurants and nightlife, and with over thirty five beaches to choose from, you’ll be spoiled for choice.  There are also two major national parks to explore: Christoffelpark and Shete Boka National Park.

You can access the Salt Lakes and nature reserve directly from the property and marvel at the flamingos and wildlife that breed here and the many hiking and mountain bike trails that traverse the area.
