Award winning Mexican architect Alberto Kalach, whose work spans both imposing commercial installations and more modest residential projects, has created a holiday home in Mexico with the scale and sensibilities of both. Composed of stacked stratified layers of terra cotta bricks and clean geometry that invokes and celebrates Usonian disciplines as well as the Mayan sensibilities of the region, the home is a dramatic installation with a firm sense of belonging.  Its spaces are staggered over three floors, with wide-open living spaces lined with floor to ceiling glazing and paned glass that allow the light to filter through.

The ground floor houses the bedrooms and the second floor the living room, dining room and kitchen with a terrace spanning its length overlooking the gardens. The third floor media room includes a large fireplace and separate dining space.

An ideal space to share, there are five bedrooms that can sleep up to eleven guests.

The gardens envelope you in greenery, with a private pool, a greenhouse and outdoor dining areas that connect and overlook the forests.

Deeply involved in the restoration and idealization of the region’s origins as a protected natural preserve, Kalach’s design is a return to the ecological values that allow the design to breathe and the composition to unfold, with a firm grasp of space, light and utility.

It’s a unique place to disconnect and get into nature and the work of Alberto Kalach.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

AROUND

A couple of hours west of Mexico City, the forested lakeside town of Valle de Bravo is a well known getaway for city dwellers to take in the spectacular natural beauty and lakeside recreation of the region. Sometimes referred to as the “Malibu” of Mexico, it’s got both the authentic small town vibe along with a cosmopolitan influx of urbanites and culture mixing with its colonial era beauty.

Encircled by mountains and forests with the sparkling Lake Avándaro at the center, the historic architecture, cobbled stone streets and rural population   coexist alongside trendy galleries, cafes and boutiques.

The 17th century Plaza de la Independencia and San Francisco de Asis Church forms its spiritual, cultural and civic heart.

Do not miss the magical Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a habitat for millions of migratory butterflies, just north of town.
