AROUND

The house is located five minutes’ drive from the beach in Santa Teresa, but feels very cut off from the world. With its almost year-round sunshine and 80-degree temperature, this is the perfect retreat for yogis and surfers. Once a sleepy fishing village, it’s now a an upscale surf destination with pristine beaches, great food and a chilled vibe.

According to the New York Times it’s the new Tulum: “Santa Teresa, a string of beach-backed hamlets on the southern tip of Costa Rica’s westernmost peninsula, has an edge-of-the-world vibe that still feels remote and inspires dreams of relocation.”

If you don’t want to spend your days lounging by the pool, there is plenty to do in the neighborhood. The Santa Teresa and Mal Pais area is renowned for its surfing, but if watching nature’s more your thing, you’ll love the local monkeys, parrots and toucans that frequent the neighborhood. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a canopy tour through the forest to get up close and personal with the local fauna.

There are lots of great little restaurants, with food from Argentina, France, Italy and Israel, as well as the local Tico fare. Farther afield, great excursions include Playa Hermosa, Playa Carmen, Malpais, the Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve, and Montezuma.

The Nicoya Peninsula is considered one of the world’s only Blue Zones, where locals are famed for their longevity. It is also home to one of National Geographic’s 100 most beautiful roads, surrounded by nature reserves and waterfalls.
