Situated half way between the main port and Piscità and close to the island’s famous Sciara del Fuoco (lava scar), this 18th century townhouse is located right along the road just a short stroll from the water’s edge. Standing out against the simpler more provincial houses on the island, the villa’s ornate construction and details are more elaborate and a testament to the early southern Italian noble family who started out here.
Restored by award winning Milan based architect Luciano Giorgi and his partner Antonino Burgo, the home is evocative of their work with luxury brands and commercial spaces. Partnering with the architects, the art dealer owners maintained the structural characteristics while simplifying the interiors to reflect a more modern pared down aesthetic. Built on two levels against a slope, the configuration allows direct access to both floors from the outside.
Formerly an old bakery, the ground floor has been completely redesigned keeping the connection alive with the upper floor while reinterpreting some of the historic features with a chic contemporary update.
The first floor features the characteristic vaulted ceilings, majolica floors of alternating tiles with cool, limestone plaster work, polished concrete and lovely views of the sea from three sides. There’s a sitting room and dining area and a traditional strombolana kitchen featuring a wood-burning brick oven with a former storage loft above. A large projection room opens directly onto the street, and on the other side two bedrooms overlook the garden with two additional bedrooms upstairs. Double doors lead out to an outdoor patio used as an additional dining and living area, with a teak deck featuring lovely views of the sea. Under the patio the old cistern with vaulted barrel ceilings has been cleverly transformed into a hot tub for relaxing soaks. Outside, a Mediterranean garden surrounds you with herbs, while the rooftop doubles as a lounge and sun deck with breathtaking 360 degree views from the sea to the volcano, to the church of San Vincenzo.

AROUND
Just off the coast of mainland Italy and north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea, the island of Stromboli is one of seven in the UNESCO Aeolian chain. With just a few hundred inhabitants, the island is as quiet as it gets except for the mountain itself. An active volcano, the mountain comes to life periodically and for the adventurous, there are hikes of dramatic scenery up to the crater. Less taxing is the hike up to the summit of the Sciara del Fuoco, the blackened lava scar that runs down the island’s northern flank where you’ll have fabulous (and safer!) views of eruptions from the L’Osservatorio. With just two villages on the island, the larger Stromboli and the small fishing village of Ginostra, you can traverse the entire island through the trans island hiking trail or travel between the two by boat which is the best way to appreciate the neighboring islands. With regular ferry services, you can visit nearby Lipari, Panarea, Alicudi, Filicudi the volcanic Vulcano or the uninhabited sister island of Strombolicchio
