Overlooking the Hawkesbury River on Dangar Island, this modern holiday home hugs a steep slope at the tops of native angophora trees and is situated to capture and maximize the natural light and the lovely river views. Only an hour north of Sydney, it feels a world away.

Designed by Robertson & Hindmarsh Architects, the home is owned and was styled by Sydney based design journalist and stylist, David Harrison and has been featured in numerous architectural and design publications.

The dark timber exteriors give way to light and soothing interiors with a bright open plan living space with concertina doors that open fully for a seamless connection to the outdoors. The neutral palette of grey, brown and bleached wood floors give it a timeless modern appeal and are punctuated by windows that frame the natural environment. Sharing the space with the fully equipped kitchen and dining area that seats up to ten, it’s a convivial space that invites connection around the fireplace. Beautifully decorated with a striking selection of designer furniture mixed with key vintage pieces including Arne Jacobsen, Norman Cherner and Alvar Aalto with classic Noguchi lights, it’s a stylish and distinctive composition.

The master bedroom with river views and one of two twin bedrooms are on the upper floor while the lower floor bedroom also has a great view and direct access to a private deck. Each bedroom is decorated with an eclectic collection of one of a kind vintage pieces and eye catching art and furnishings.

Outside, you’ll want to hang out on the deck where you can BBQ and dine al fresco with the sound of the river at your feet.

AROUND

Situated within an extensive network of islands, beach heads and peninsulas on the Hawkesbury river that empties into the nearby South Pacific, Dangar Island is a blissfully remote community all to itself. A short ferry ride from the mainland fishing hamlet of Brooklyn, the island is just an hours ride north from Sydney. Barely over seventy acres in total of lushly forested land and riverfront beaches it’s isolation and unspoiled natural beauty is it’s charm. Blissfully free of cars, the island’s only mode of transportation are golf carts or wheelbarrows! Surrounded on all sides by massive expanses of spectacular national parks including Marrmarra, Muogamarra, Ku-ring-gai and more, the area is home to some of New South Wales’ best natural playgrounds. With just one cafe and pub, you’ll want to BYO for most things and hop the ferry to grab some fresh seafood in Brooklyn.
