If you’re looking at cabin rentals in Australia, this is a great little property. Located two hours southeast of Melbourne, it’s a cool loft surrounded in the lush farmland of South Gippsland, a great destination for guests wanting something off the beaten path. It is so private, say its owners, that your closest neighbors are wallabies, kangaroos, wombats, and echidnas. Relax in the hot tub with a glass of wine, and watch the local birdlife perform aerial manoeuvres.

The house was lovingly created by renowned builder Jim Commadeur, who built it from scratch while living in a tent pitched nearby. Much of the house, including ladders and cabinets, were crafted by hand from wood, and everything has a meaning. The current owners pay homage to his ideals by using predominantly recycled or handmade furnishings.

The property is completely open-plan with a combined living room, bedroom and kitchen, which gives prime position to a gorgeous antique four-poster bed. There is an indoor verandah with two double futons. Outside, timber walkways lead to an exterior Japanese bathhouse, with extensive views across the neighboring farm. The five-acre grounds have an outdoor dining area and barbecue, as well as a hammock.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

There is a stereo-CD/radio with iPod plug, as well as wifi, but no television. There are also board games and a good selection of books and local magazines. Linen for the king-sized bed is provided, but guests are asked to bring towels and bedding for the futons.

The kitchen has a retro stove and oven, that is not brilliant for cooking, a microwave, an electric frying pan, a toaster and a refrigerator.

AROUND

The nearby coastline is rugged and secluded, and often compared to Tasmania. The loft is only 30 minutes by car from Wilsons Promontory National Park – one of the most spectacular peninsulas in Australia. It’s also near Walkerville on the Promontory Coast, and nearby beaches include Walkerville, Venus Bay and Sandy Point.   There are great spots for fishing, hiking, cycling, golf, and much more. Upon booking, the owners send a list of things to do, with information on markets, galleries and restaurants.
