Amsterdam-based artists Martin and Marieken were looking for a radical change to city life and in 2012 found the perfect antidote in a former 12th-century vicarage in the Uckermark region north of Berlin. An area of outstanding natural beauty, the five-acre property is dotted with heritage orchards, ancient glacial landscapes and dense forest. Set within a small town, the property is recessed so that it appears as its own village.

Harnessing their passion and creativity inspired by years in the Dutch Art world, the duo manifested their dream to revive and transform the dilapidated buildings and land into a unique holiday village with simple values and the question of “What does a person really need to be happy?”

Named after the blackthorn that proliferates around it, this cozy modern cabin rental is tucked away in a private rural setting where it meets the fields and forests beyond. The black charred clapboard exteriors are modeled on the Japanese method of preserving wood (shou-sugu-ban) and the simple box design features large walls of glass that open on two sides with panoramic views of the wilderness. Warm wood floors and sharp rustic modern lines give it a contemporary feel with a bright open plan living space that includes one double bedroom and a fireside lounge area with a kitchen and dining area. Built over a corner, the large terrace faces south and is the ideal sunny spot to dine outside. Both the living and sleeping areas can be completely opened out to enjoy the fresh country air.

The property includes several other accommodations including additional cabins, a modern loft and a small shop where you’ll find delicious local cheeses and wines, homemade local delicacies and the seasonal bounty from the organic gardens. The barn serves as the property’s multifunctional common lounge and there’s a self contained sauna to warm your bones as well as an outdoor hot-tub under the stars. Surrounded by ancient orchards, gardens and several terraces and fireplaces, the property is an expansive outdoor lounge where you can rediscover the simplicity of life and the history and beauty of the region.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Complimentary transfers from Lychen markt and Fürstenberg train station. Wifi in the main barn. Optional fridge stocking.

AROUND

Located at the border of the Uckermark Lakes Nature Park in Brandenburg, the area is part of an ancient glacial landscape with sprawling woods, meadows and lakes populated by abundant wildlife. The large Kronsee Lake is situated at the edge of the village within a few minutes walk and is a refreshing crystal clear swimming spot. The small village of Rutenberg has a population of just over two hundred and is a nice mix of old and new inhabitants that have transformed and updated the village’s historic buildings while preserving the original character. Berlin is about ninety minutes south.
