Built in 1881 by Baron József Szterényi, this exquisitely detailed 19th century mansion resides in an exclusive enclave in the hills above Budapest on the aptly named Art Street (Muvesz utca). Once home to celebrated Dutch writer Jaap Scholten for many years, the villa is a heritage listed building full of rich architectural detail. Restyled by the Brody House Group’s art and furniture team, the group has wisely left much of the house undisturbed while infusing it with their signature modern spirit.

The winding oak stairway leads to three rosewood paneled reception rooms originally intended for drinking, dining and smoking, one with a prominently features Zsolnay tiled stove and double doors that lead to the loggia and terrace. The living room on the north side of the house has an open fireplace and a hidden door to the entrance hall that is adjacent to the winter conservatory decorated with elaborate art nouveau stained glass windows by Miksa Róth that now serves as a sumptuous dining room. Here there are two bedrooms with elaborately designed Italian marble and cast iron baths.

The second floor has three bedrooms and three bathrooms and a sitting area with a small balcony that offers magnificent 360-degree views of the city below. While the first floor is dominated by classic period colors and detail, the attic has been restored with a more contemporary style. The bottom level includes a kitchen and exercise room with steam bath and a wine cellar as well as the sixth en suite bedroom and study with a private garden entrance.

The extensive gardens were redesigned by Baroness Margaretha Voërst van Lynden augmenting the already lush and ancient chestnut, pine and yew trees where the incredibly elaborate fountain made with Zsolnay tile sits in a central place of honor. The uniquely designed swimming pool extends from the colonnade out into the gardens and comes equipped with a bubbling jacuzzi.

Rich, ornate and elegant, this villa for rent in Budapest combines the best of the regions’ history with a newly inspired take on its culture.

AROUND

Located in the 12th district in the hills above the city, this posh and leafy enclave of historical mansions are just a short drive from central Budapest. A city of stunning romantic beauty, it’s divided into two distinct sections: the hilly Buda and Old Town district, and the flat Pest district bisected by the Danube and connected by the Chain Bridge. Further divided into twenty three ever widening neighborhoods, the restored elegance is everywhere, with neo-classical, Barque and Art Nouveau architecture and romantic bridges across the river. You’ll want to explore the many left bank sights, including the now famous “ruined pubs.” Located throughout the 7th district in the old Jewish quarter, these underground bars in the ruins of abandoned buildings are part of a unique nightlife. Left in ruins after WW2, the area is now a vibrant and fascinating part of the culture as are the many thermal baths the city is famous for. Grab the funicular for a ride up Castle Hill to the Old Town with the remnants of Roman and medieval eras and sweeping views of the city.
