Located just outside Akureyri across from Eyjarfjodur Bay, this vacation home rental in northern Iceland is a uniquely crafted installation with panoramic mountain views from every window.

Designed and built by Reykjavik based architectural firm Arkís, the position, location of the nearby fjord and environmental impact were taken into account in establishing the site resulting in a home that is sustainable and sensitive to its surroundings. Inspired by vastly different architectural influences including traditional Swiss mountain chalets, California ranches and Japanese minimalism, the home is constructed of larch wood exteriors and eco-friendly materials that blend into the environment. Comprised of three individual apartments, the  alternating sloped roof lines and bold linear forms were also inspired by the surrounding mountains and geological topography.

The two bedroom apartment utilizes every inch of space with the compact but open and airy living, dining and kitchen areas occupying the ground floor and railess stairs leading to the mezzanine-level bedroom. There’s also a first floor bedroom with bunk beds ideal for kids. Simple and spare, the concrete floors, white walls and pale wood are punctuated by splashes of bold red accents.

Large glass doors open out to the terrace that faces the views for the perfect place to enjoy the breathtaking northern lights in winter or the midnight sun in summer.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi and TV, all linens and kitchen amenities.

AROUND

Just a ten minute drive outside of Iceland’s northeastern capital of Akureyri, this wild and beautiful region is situated just below the Arctic Circle. The town is the cultural and commercial hub of the northern most reaches of the island and although remote and surrounded by vast expanses of wilderness, it’s a lively city of just 20,000 inhabitants. Despite it’s size, there are many great restaurants and cafes, galleries and shops as well as annual summer and winter music and cultural festivals. The drive  along the beautiful western shores of the Eyjafjordur Fjord is not to be missed, with views of the Goðafoss, Dettifoss, Dimmuborgir and Mývatn waterfalls as well as Jökulsárgljúfur Grand Canyon. Head out for hiking and nature tours at nearby Sulur mountain and some of Iceland’s best skiing at The Troll Peninsula (home of heli-skiing). Day trips to Grimsey island which straddles the Arctic Circle can be organized from town as well as whale watching in Húsavík.
