AROUND
Known as the Valley Isle and home to where the sun sleeps every night (Haleakala Crater-“House of the Sun”), Maui leads a lot of “best of” lists. Lahaina’s famous historic coastal whaling village (National Register of Historic Places) was once the capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom (Melville launched from here and wrote THAT famous book on his voyage). Happily you can set sail from the Lahaina harbor and enjoy these majestic creatures during the winter migrations. Minus the harpoons…..Full of Michelin-rated restaurants, unique boutiques and art galleries (Friday nights are ‘art nights’ in town) and the Old Lahaina Luau.
Ka’anapali Beach is just two miles from the house and has been named one of the best in America but there’s much more to Maui than this heavily touristed resort strip–although the torch lit cliff diving every evening off Puu Kekaa is quite cool. This was how King Kahekili got his kicks in the 1700s and it’s still a blast to watch. Hint: hit Makena instead for a vast state park-like beach without the theme park resort vibe. The plantation legacy remains here in the quiet old upcountry farms on the slopes of Haleakala and the southern districts, and upland farms can provide a quieter look into Maui’s homestead lifestyle and interesting past. And the road to Hana….winding, wild and one of the most celebrated scenic drives, it forces you to make sure and take your time, ending at the frontier town that while heavily visited, still holds it’s real charm.
