Located steps from Kanaha Beach Park on the island’s north shores, this beach house rental in Maui is a true original. Set within lush gardens in a timeless tropical setting, Brooklyn based architect Roberto Sosa collaborated with the owners to transform the 1940’s beach cottage into a contemporary hideaway for two. The home’s classic silhouette remains undisturbed and care was taken for the home to harmonize with it’s surroundings. Clad in wood siding inside and out, the rustic finishes are given a polished makeover that allows for the original character to shine. The lofty beamed ceilings and interiors are whitewashed, giving the home a breezy, simple palette.
The living spaces are all about comfort and casual beach style, with a smartly refurbished kitchen that includes cleverly disguised modern amenities and two double bedrooms with luxurious, hotel quality baths that were retrofitted with custom tile and fixtures.
Decorated with simple elegance and with pieces that remind you of island life, the house is certainly stylish but welcoming and laid back. Head out to the wrap around lanai and screened porch for a deeply relaxing experience among the lush, tropical gardens and ancient monkey trees.

AROUND
Blessedly free of resorts and the bustle of tourists of the south side, Maui’s north shore is a mellow paradise of lush jungle, white sandy beaches and famous surf breaks where the original spirit of Aloha and tradition still live. The small town of Paia is known for its laid back hippie charms and a place you might breeze through on the road to Hana. Winding, wild and one of the most celebrated scenic drives, it forces you to make sure you take your time, ending at the frontier town that while heavily visited, still holds a real charm. The plantation legacy remains here in the quiet old upcountry farms on the slopes of Haleakala and upland areas, which can provide a quieter look into Maui’s homestead lifestyle and interesting past. Known as the Valley Isle and home to where the sun sleeps every night (Haleakala Crater-“House of the Sun”), Maui leads a lot of “best of” lists. Lahaina’s famous historic coastal whaling village (National Register of Historic Places) was once the capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom and is full of Michelin-rated restaurants, unique boutiques and art galleries (Friday nights are ‘art nights’ in town) and the Old Lahaina Luau.
