Brazilian architect Wladimir Alves de Souza is often noted for his expertise and finesse in integrating his work within its environment, and this holiday home in Rio de Janeiro is no exception. Placed atop the hillside neighborhood of Santa Teresa, the villa sits in a secluded and lofty perch on the edge of a protected forest overlooking captivating views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Guanabara Bay, and the city below.

A study in contrasts, this massive villa is built on four staggered levels and composed of raw concrete, exotic wood and meticulously crafted materials. Entering through the striking concrete arches and a massive six-meter wooden door, you are immersed into the airy interiors with soaring ceilings and expansive windows that face impressive vantage points.

The bold, Brutalist structural features are softened and accented with textiles and items from Thailand, one-of-a-kind pieces from the antique markets of Europe, and vintage mid-century modern works by Nils Jonsson and VB Wilkins. Interiors were designed by Yorick Piette with furnishings by Ricardo Fasanello and a striking concrete and steel wall was installed by artist Miriam Löllmann.

There are seven guest rooms with several of the baths featuring Portuguese azulejo mosaics and ample room for up to fourteen guests.

A state-of-the-art sound proofed music studio is situated below the pool, and designed with integrated sound technology throughout the property for an unparalleled audio experience. It comes equipped with extra living space for two guests and opens out to the forest.

Surrounded by a Burle Marx garden which blends into the landscape, the property has a strong connection with its surroundings and is punctuated by a unique glass panelled elevator that connects with the garage below.

A place where the exotic and modernism meet, this villa is a uniquely conceived work of art.

Long the prestigious district of the carioca elite, it’s a unique neighborhood all it’s own and close enough yet far away enough when you want to escape the buzz of the city below. The pulsing beat and joie de vivre of overlapping cultures is the charm of Rio, from the twisting density of the favelas, to the dizzying action of downtown and the fashionable coastal beaches, the vibrant rhythms and diversity of the city are captivating.
