Casa Vendicari, Sicily, Italy

Designed and built by Milan based architect Marco Merendi, this holiday home for rent in Sicily is a striking structure of pure form that respects the light, the character and the silence of the Sicilian land.

Located just outside of the Vendicari Nature Reserve, the home has infinite horizon views of the reserve and out to sea from a privileged and private spot. Discovered by chance when on vacation, the house was inspired by the island’s unique scenery which Merendi has interpreted into a contemporary context without detracting from it’s natural character. A careful symbiosis is expressed through the choice of the locally quarried stone from Noto and lava stone from Mt. Etna, with bold, Brutalist forms and seamless transitions between inside and out.

The large living area has floor to ceiling walls of glass on either side that open out onto the pool area served by terraces with numerous lounge areas. Large sheet-metal sunscreens run along the façade, shaping and fragmenting the light in the warmest hours, creating origami-like designs on the floor, and allowing fresh sea breezes to circulate. Internally, the panoramic living area is punctuated on either side with walls of stone and a centrally positioned lava stone fireplace. The beautiful ‘made to measure’ island kitchen dominates the space and is designed with entertaining in mind. There are three en suite double bedrooms with lovely views over the surrounding almond groves, salt lagoons, and out to sea with room for six guests.

Constructed from lava stone, the pool is placed in a central position like a large Arabian bathtub and is surrounded by the lounge terraces with an outdoor kitchen and al fresco dining areas. This is the magical spot at night for long convivial ‘aperitivo’ under the moon and stars.

This unique home offers a simple but dramatic version of luxury with sharp architectural design that highlights the beauty of nature in a stylish and relaxed atmosphere.

AROUND

Immersed next to the protected and stunningly beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve and just a twenty minute walk to some of the best beaches on the island, you’ll have the best of both worlds. The reserve is located halfway between Noto and Pachino extending into almost four thousand acres of forests and undisturbed marine and bird eco-systems that open to a clear sea and long, golden beaches including: Tonnara, Eloro, Pizzuta, Calamosche and Marianelli (they are all easily accessible within a short drive or walk from the house).

The pretty seaside fishing village of Marzamemi is ten minutes drive and is well know for it’s seafood and the central Tonnara square, full of traditional restaurants and bars as well as its film festival in July.

Nearby Noto is a historic UNESCO World Heritage site with some of the most spectacular and elegant Baroque sites in the world and is one of the gems in the greater Val di Noto region along with its sister cities of Modica, Ragusa and Scicli, all reachable within a short drive. Make a day of it.

The port town of Siracusa is a significant archaeological area with an ancient Greek amphitheater, the Orecchio di Dionisio Cave, Apollo’s Temple and the Teatro Romana ruins. Be sure not to miss the Ortigia neighborhood.

The Marina di Modica, Marina di Ragusa and the Andrea Doria promenade, feature some of the areas most popular beaches on the island including Sampieri, Pozzallo and Donnalucata.
