For those in search of a romantic getaway, to others looking for excitement and adventure, this villa for rent in Spain is ideally located in the heart of L’Empordanet, on the outskirts of the Gavarres National Park in Girona.

Immersed within a private countryside hamlet of one hundred acres, the property dates back to the 13th century with subsequent evidence of a 17th century noble family’s occupation and coat of arms still engraved on the portals.

Most recently renovated by a family of avid travelers, the extensive restorations took years to complete, preserving all of the authentic and classic features from the past, with cleverly integrated modern conveniences, creating a stylish mix of contemporary and historic Spanish style.

Large and welcoming, the home can accommodate up to twelve guests, with a spacious sitting room, formal dining room and professionally equipped kitchen on the ground floor with soaring ceilings and plenty of space. Three cavern-like spaces of vaulted stone have been transformed into additional living, dining and sleeping rooms on the ground floor with five double bedrooms and two sitting rooms on the upper floors.

Bright and airy, the interiors are enhanced by many original features, local brocante treasures, and hand crafted furnishings and antiques that complement the historic aspects of the property.

The expansive grounds wrap around the house with a mixture of lush gardens and terraces for alfresco dining with ample space for relaxation and play with a pool and lounge areas.

Combining simplicity and beauty, while highlighting the nature surrounding it, the villa is removed from the hustle and bustle of the beach party life, providing a peaceful and re-energizing oasis.

Conversation with Alexandra Lichtenberg

Do you want to celebrate and dance? Do you want to cook? Do you want to be pampered? Do you want to meet your new colleagues, imagine your next promotion… or anything else, for that matter? Nomads Apt was made to welcome creative people for any number of experiences, in a very special location built on the site of the former Berlin Wall. With a cinematographic view of the Berlin Wall Memorial, a large park in the city center that extends along the former border, it offers the possibility of escaping from reality. We met with owner Alexandra Lichtenberg to find out more about this exciting new collection of vacation home rentals in Berlin.

Alexandra Lichtenberg, can you explain your project?

AL: “We opened Nomads Apt six months ago, after 18 months of reflection. We approached the design of all our apartments through the experience of life here. Our inspiration came from diverse experiences that we can offer. This is why each apartment has a special spirit and decoration.

“The blue one is made for the joy of cooking. You can have a food experience in there with a very well equipped, almost professional, kitchen. Because we want to welcome some of the best chefs in the world to Berlin. They are invited to stay here and cook for their special guests, with an amazing view of the former wall. The brown apartment is much more to celebrate and have a party. There is a dance floor that opens to reveal a king-size bed underneath it, a real bar, and the living room looks like a kind of club. You can listen to music with special lights all around and, of course, you have a closed bedroom too. It’s much more to celebrate and have fun with friends. The third apartment is pink. It’s a place where you can take care of your body, have a massage and other beauty treatments.

“Each of them has an amazing view of Berlin and the memorial. Each of them offers a very special experience. Each apartment can be rented for events like business meetings, weddings, anniversaries, commercial promotions, openings… Things like that. This is why each has its own ambiance.”

The blue apartment is a very special place. It feels like an aquarium, don’t you think?

AL: “Yes, it’s really true. I’m happy you said that because I love the ocean and dolphins, and it’s true, the ambiance here is almost aquatic. I can see what you mean and, you know, the color of the ocean is my favorite. It’s amazing because the front wall of our building is blue too… I have to say it’s like a bubble here, a kind of cocoon. Due to its special geographic location, a special mood is blowing through here. Outside it’s a memorial! So it’s a place of silence but at the same time with a lot of people and tourists. There is, in our building, a silence too, thanks to the design.

“When I’m in here, I’m very calm and a bit disconnected from outside. And especially on the weekend when so many people are around here. So you have a key to your own flat in a central area, you push the front door open, you cross a lobby with art pieces and you arrive here, in this bubble… in this aquarium. I tell you: this is very exclusive and emotional.”

So it’s also a place to work?

AL: “To think! We can host 10 people here in the most comfortable and friendly way. They can speak, share, write, cook…. And look at this large table. We can move it easily to organize a brainstorming meeting — before having a dinner around it. It’s a place where people can meet. This apartment is a quiet place open to reflexion and creativity, with a bunch of great facilities.”

This is why the lobby is a kind of art gallery, isn’t it?

AL: “I’m from Cologne but I’ve worked in Berlin for 20 years, and I work with many artists from Berlin. So we present some art pieces in the lobby of our building. If guests like those pieces, they can meet the artist and buy it. It’s a kind of additional exclusive service. When you come from outside, you walk through a private exhibition in the lobby of your building. It’s like a step, a decompression room, before you arrive in your apartment. It’s relaxing and very zen.”

Sculpted Steel

German artist Tilmann Krumrey, influenced by the Bauhaus movement and a father who was an interior architect, is best known for his sculptures of the human form. He also owns our Glockenbach Loft in Germany, a former warehouse converted into a live-work-gallery space with constantly changing selections of art… Including this kitchen, a great piece of art that has been built into the space itself. Tilmann approached a company in Franconia to bring the stainless steel idea to life — a striking piece with rounded corners that were definitely a challenge to achieve…

“Asking them to bend those corners in 1mm steel was like ordering the largest tool they had in their toolbox,” says Tillmann. “The top is a massive 6mm brushed stainless steel plate that is getting even more beautiful with every scratch it receives from usage.” It has the same dimensions as the lower body of the kitchen and is set in scene by a narrow shadow gap between the body and the top. The black element behind is made from HPC in the very same quality as the wooden sideboard on the right. All this creates a nice volume and solid, monolithic appearance.

The imposing artwork on the wall above the kitchen is ‘Quadruple Twins’ by Mary Bauermeister, the famous Fluxus artist from the Sixties whose work focuses on the mathematical principles behind natural objects – in this case, stone patterns. It creates a striking contrast with the metal below it… These works are available for sale.

Something we find very interesting is how the theme of rounded corners and edges runs through the whole loft, and shadow lines are used in order to shape the whole space as a sculpture. So it isn’t surprising that this kitchen was designed to fit the space. It’s a sculptor’s dream come true!

Conversation with Pavlina Williams

The Geodesic dome made popular by 20th-century architect R. Buckminster Fuller is one of those structural forms that stops you in your tracks. A half sphere made up of triangles and polygons, it’s not only an extremely efficient architectural device, but it also has a cool, otherworldly feel that (all at once) transports you back in time to a free-spirited past and forward into a space-age future. When LA-based architect Pavlina Williams stumbled upon a down-at-heel dome house in Palm Springs in 2015, it was love at first sight. Since moving to California in 2005 (from Prague via Vancouver), Pavlina had spent weekends pursuing her passion for home renovation, with the help of her husband Carter. But this project stood out from the rest.

The home, originally built in 1956 by a chemical engineer as a weekend getaway for his family, was made up of two parts — the original rectangular section, and a dome that was added in the Seventies. When Pavlina and Carter found it, it had been more or less empty for a decade and was badly in need of some TLC.

So, how did you find the Dome House?

Pavlina Williams: “My husband and I love Palm Springs. One night he was looking at listings online, and found it. He woke me up and showed it to me, and I immediately fell in love because it looked sort of crazy. It didn’t look like anything I could have imagined. We made an offer the next day — without ever seeing the inside because there were squatters in the building. After three months, the squatters moved out, and inside it looked pretty much what we had expected. A disaster!”

Pavlina Williams Pavlina Williams Pavlina Williams Pavlina Williams Pavlina Williams Pavlina Williams Pavlina Williams Pavlina Williams

Why did you fall for it so badly?

Pavlina Williams: “A big part of initial attraction to the property was that it represented for me the bohemian California culture of the Seventies. The hippie movement which I was always fond of as a teenager growing up in Eastern Europe in the Seventies, dreaming of one day living in the great America, as we called it.

“I had no thought of creating a vacation rental at that time. I just really wanted the house. The vacation rental idea came after, thinking that the house and five-acre property actually had potential to pay for itself. So I could have the dream house without feeling financially guilty. We stay there couple of times a year, though, when our adult kids come to visit. They love it there.”

Was the renovation intimidating?

Pavlina Williams: “It was a challenge but it was exciting at the same time – the idea that we could do something with it. The main issue was the windows because it was really dark. There was a dingy little window here and there. It was such a waste of potential – and the 360-degree views.  The people who were there before us were obsessed with not wasting energy, so the few windows that were actually there had Styrofoam boards in them. You couldn’t see through them.”

So you replaced them with a jigsaw puzzle of windows. What was the idea behind that?

Pavlina Williams: “The whole idea was that we wanted a panoramic view. We love those mountains. I read that you could take out up to 30 percent of the dome’s triangles and the structure will still be solid. I was a bit worried, but I took the risk. We cut out the triangular openings, reinforced them with two-by-fours, and custom-ordered the windows from Home Depot. It ended up fine. Everything fitted together – but people would not think that Home Depot was capable of that kind of thing!”

What other changes did you make?

PW: “We removed some walls. As an architect, I like open spaces. There was a storage unit inside the dome, which had a humongous safe bolted to the concrete – so we removed that. We removed the walls in the kitchen and dining rooms, took out all the carpeting and all the vinyl. We took it down to a structural slab. We just had that polished. The house also had a suspended acoustic ceiling, which looked really horrendous. We took it all out and attached dry wall to the underside of the joists so that we gained a little more clearance. The house had an enclosed atrium between the two buildings – we removed the enclosing walls to make the most of the views.”

What were the biggest challenges?

PW: “The windows. And the fact that we lived in Los Angeles and I was directing the workers by phone. We went every weekend, but I was not able to be there every day. Every weekend, it was, ‘Did they do it the way we asked them to do it?’

“It was also really hot in the summer. Yes, I know everybody knows that it’s hot in Palm Springs in the summer, but it took us a while to get adjusted! I didn’t even think it was possible to reach 129 degrees Fahrenheit. We added a new air conditioning unit so we managed to cool the house, but whenever you opened the door and went outside, it was unbelievable.”

What was the thinking behind the interiors?

PW: “I think what takes people by surprise is that from the outside, you probably expect some macrame wall hangings, shaggy carpets and handmade driftwood furniture inside. I never had any doubt about how to furnish the place and about the interior design of it. To style the place inside as mid-century modern with the outside being a geodesic dome shape is not that usual. But that style seemed to me the clear option as I am really attracted to modern architecture, and Palm Springs, with its mid-century modern tradition, is just around the corner.”

How long did the whole process take?

PW: “It took exactly a year, and we went every weekend, more or less.”

What do you like best about it?

PW: “The location and the views. It’s five acres – and you hardly see the neighbors. You’re in the middle of nowhere. I mean that in a good way. You have the windmills all around you, so it feels like this is the end of the road, like you are here on your own. I love the desert, I love the mountains. In my mind, it’s really all about what’s around it.”

Conversation with Arnold Aarssen of studioarte

We love the work of studioarte, a design ensemble that’s based between Portugal and the Netherlands, and headed up by creative director Arnold Aarssen. Over the years, we’ve included quite a few of their stylish designs in our collection, and the latest addition is their lovely Lagoa Townhouse. After working with Arnold for some time now, we decided to sit down for a chat — to find out more about his work and what inspires him.

Arnold describes himself as more or less self-taught in design and architecture. Following rebellious teen years and a varied career starting in hospitality concept management, he set up design company Soap Ateliers in Rotterdam. After seven years at its helm, he sold up and, in 1981, moved part-time to Portugal, a country he had fallen in love with over countless visits.

It was there — in Silves, on the Algarve — that studioarte was born. It’s now a fully licensed architecture office, with three partners, a “booming” business in concept creation, architectural/interior design and project management, and Arnold tells us he’s enjoying the steady of flow of success.

Arnold Aarssen Arnold Aarssen Arnold Aarssen

What drew you to the Algarve?

Arnold Aarssen: “The Algarve has this bright light and so much positivity in the air. The moment you arrive, you have this amazing smell… It comes from the mountains that are named caldeirão. They are covered in herbal plants, such as the estevas, an oily plant which gives off a perfume. But it’s the soil as well.

“The Algarve itself is laid-back, and the influence of the ocean is fantastic — pure air, clean ocean, great fish… And the people welcome you as a friend. Here in the Algarve, you still feel and notice the Moorish lifestyle; we have these roots here. It is in their genes. And let’s not forget the very healthy simple kitchen — barbecued fish, fish stews, fresh grilled sardinhas.”

We have a number of studioarte’s properties in our collection. Do you have a particular interest in vacation homes?

AA: “The Algarve is a small world. We only have 500,000 people living here, and 7 million visitors per year. We are at the end of Europe, at the ocean! Basically, we don’t have many large projects. Most architects’ offices deal with private housing projects. At studioarte, we develop so many holiday homes for private owners, in short because we are different. We feel different, and we have a different scope. We know how to feel at home, to play with nature, not fighting against it but enjoying it to the full. We love innovative construction.”

At studioarte, you talk about translating emotions into a new form of architecture. Can you explain that?

AA: “We strive to have functional design, and we love comfort. A bathroom is part of a daily ritual, and we think that in a holiday home this can be the ultimate experience, the hammam spa effect in your private home. We also think that less can be so much more. We want to tickle the experience, create a vibrant positive life in these houses. We love the wow factor, and to give the ultimate comfort experience.

“We come from a Moorish culture, and we blend these influences in our designs. We follow basic Portuguese architecture, but you’ll always recognize our handscript in all our designs — well thought through and tailor made, not following the fashion for minimalismo crystal monster houses that we now see being built more and more.”

Arnold Aarssen Arnold Aarssen Arnold Aarssen Arnold Aarssen

The Lagoa Townhouse (pictured above) is a sophisticated and playful modern space behind a traditional exterior. Can you tell us what inspired it?

AA: “It started after we purchased the property and met the former owners. It was pure magic — they told us about their lives, the traditions of their family, and how they had lived in this house. What you see now is a blend of a Bohemian lifestyle. We mixed the old pieces with our own to create a story, a story of a passion for art — and life in general. The unpredictable element is the urban jungle garden with its water feature. Just after entering the front door, you enter a different world. The art pieces were purchased on our travels, but they have to fit into the lifestyle concept of the house. We prefer local artists such as Otelo Fabião, as well the photo works of Tiago Grosso and art by the Iraqi painter Saad Ali.”

You’re also the owner of this particular home. Is sharing your space with guests a very personal experience?

AA: “Yes, for us, each guest is an adventure on its own. We want to deliver a spotless house, and we believe the experience should start immediately after we meet. The conversations are always a delight, and we love meeting people from all over the world. With guests from BoutiqueHomes, we often have memorable adventures and they become our ambassadors for life. They share our works, and they sometimes become our clients.”

What do you look for when you travel?

AA: “When we travel ourselves, we pick out special places, mostly from BoutiqueHomes — the ones which look different in appeal and feel. Each design can be different, a different adventure. Then we book and… never a failure. It is always a date in itself without being a blind date. And it’s always like, ‘Gosh, have I been here before?'”

Set within a wooded hillside overlooking the eastern coast of Attica’s Riviera, this luxury villa in Greece is a surprising and indulgent retreat that is a feast for the senses.

Designed by Attica based architects Kostas Zouvelos and Kassiani Theodorakakos, the style and tone is a departure from the usual luxury villa and is a shift from some of the historic preservation work the duo are known for. Towering three stories high, the structure is a seemingly random composition with intersecting living spaces and a fun assortment of geometric forms punctuated by interspersed windows and shapes.

The main floor opens into an expansive great room with a fireplace at one end with fluid and bright spaces that benefit from the natural light from the floor to ceiling glazing. Overlooking a massive pool terrace, the living, dining and spacious kitchen are great for entertaining inside and out.

Stairs lead down to the ground floor library, master suite with forest views and an additional living room, while an office space is included on the semi-floor. There are two additional en suite double bedrooms and two charming children’s rooms included on the ground floor with room for up to six adults and three kids.

Employing luxury materials, finishes, and state-of-the- art features, the newly built villa mixes contemporary style and furnishings with a few classic pieces as well as whimsical and unexpected graphic accents that keep it light and fun.

The poolside gardens are expansive and private with plenty of areas to lounge and dine in style and comfort.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Housekeeping provided every three days with optional daily housekeeping available. Wifi throughout, satellite cable TVs and audio system. COCO-MAT linens and eco-friendly bath amenities, laundry facilities. Optional services include car rental and spa and beauty services.

AROUND

The seaside settlement of Chamolia along Attica’s east coast lies just a short drive from its capitol of Athens. The historic peninsula beyond the city’s center stretches as far south as Sounion and is considered modern day Greece’s cosmopolitan Riviera, with water side promenades, resorts, excellent dining and nightlife and gorgeous beaches.

You are a ten minute walk from the villa to Chamolia’s beaches and just a five minute drive to Porto Rafti with its blue flag beaches, coastal tavernas and nearby archaeological site of Vravrona and the Sactuary of Artemis.

Shrouded in ancient myth and mystery, Athens is the cradle of democracy and responsible for the birth of theater and philosophy. Situated in Parthenon’s shadow, its temples and Byzantine churches, Ottoman era mosques, bars, restaurants, cafes, monuments, and ancient archeological treasures are all within easy reach to be able to enjoy the densely vibrant city.

Located in the peaceful countryside of Chiaramonte Gulfi, this vacation home for rent in Sicily is nestled into a quiet and remote corner north of Ragusa surrounded by abundant farmland and nature reserves.

A traditional Sicilian farmhouse, it was discovered and restored by an English antiques dealer following years of travel and collecting.

Well preserved with all of its original features intact including original terrazzo flooring, the one story house is spacious, but cozy with a bright breezy appeal.

The living room leads out onto the covered terrace overlooking a refreshing plunge pool and a shady al fresco dining area. The fully equipped kitchen was designed by a friend of the owner from London and modernized with a light touch.

There are two double bedrooms placed at the back side of the house (one en suite) and additional bath with room for four guests.

Beautifully decorated and curated with an eclectic collection of furniture and paintings from all over the world, you’ll spy a handcrafted Art Deco cocktail cabinet sourced from a cruise liner, a 1950’s portrait of Prince Kalamaka, handcrafted colonial ceiling lights discovered in Bombay, a library to peruse, and a delightful mix of sublimely combined vintage art and decor.

Head up to the rooftop terrace for stunning views of Chiaramonte Gulfi and the forests beyond.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi throughout, kitchen and bath essentials, children’s high chair and crib available. Beach essentials including beach towels, umbrella, beach blanket, snorkeling gear provided.

AROUND

The town is ideal for leisurely strolls through the old center, with its cafes, shops, bakeries and open square along its ancient cobbled streets. There are several museums and churches of artistic and historical interest as well.

The province’s historic heart, the UNESCO designated city of Ragusa is a Baroque gem perched against the rocky peaks. Divided into both the new and old centers, the historic jumble of alleyways and squares overlook the via Cap Bocchieri and opposite to the La Rocca Palace.

It’s less than an hour’s drive to Marina di Modica, Marina di Ragusa and the Andrea Doria promenade, and some of the best beaches on the island including Sampieri and  Donnalucata as well as the beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve. The nearby UNESCO “sister” cities of Scicli, Modica and Noto are stunning examples of the greater Val di Noto Baroque settlements. Syracuse and Catania are just up the coast along with the famous Mt. In the heart of Warsaw’s historic Praga district, the long-defunct vodka distillery Koneser from the 19th-century has been revived as a lively campus that includes housing, offices, a hotel, and a Vodka museum. A—PLACE sits aptly on the top floor of a building in this ancient distillery.

This one bedroom apartment has been composed with their favorite natural materials. A sense of life imbues its clean lines thanks to living textures like wood, linen, and ceramics. The double bed in the bedroom lies on coconut and tatami mats, which feel great and adds a presence of nature to the space. The bathroom is serenely washed in nude tones, and comes with a deep bathtub to soak off a day of exploration.

The kitchen is a covetable marriage of form and function: It is fully equipped should you like to fix yourself a little something good, and when you’re done, a flip of a lid hides it perfectly in its surroundings.

Like a mini gallery of contemporary design, the apartment is furnished with perfectly considered pieces from designers whose work Thisispaper admire and follow, for instance the beautiful Senator Sofa by Ole Wanscher in the living area, Pico tiles from the Bouroullec brothers in the bathroom, and wall lamps by Louis Poulsen.

Avid readers and magazine-flippers, the founders of Thisispaper has made it a point to leave you their favorite books and magazines for your browsing pleasure. A collection of vinyls await the delight of audiophiles, to be spun on the Braun SK5 record player by Dieter Rams, clearly a preferred object of the studio. Homebodies who have time on their hands are invited to indulge in a little origami or kirigami, to join in the pleasure of creation.

Additional features

Guests will find a serving of organic Japanese tea upon arrival, another passion of Thisispaper who took to the task of importing this little indulgence. Coffee lovers may try a fresh roast from Warsaw. Toiletries are provided. A washing machine and iron are available too. The living room has a floor mattress to accommodate an extra guest.

Around

A–PLACE is located in the heart of the historic Praga district—a forgotten gem on Vistula’s left bank, with rich but well-hidden history 10 minutes from the city center. It shares the area with Ząbkowska and Targowa streets, Park Skaryszewski, Soho Factory, Praga Museum, and the Neon Museum. The nearest subway and tram station – Dworzec Wileński – is 450m from the apartment. It is the fastest and most convenient connection to the city center. The Google Campus, one of the six significant Google locations in the world, is just around the corner, so you are in creative company and the coffee is great. Thisispaper has a full list of attractions for their guests upon arrival.

Villa Weiss, Attersee am Attersee, Austria

This beautiful neighborhood, on the shore of the famous Austrian lake Attersee in the Salzkammergut, was known historically as a holiday destination for international nobility. This particular villa belonged to Brazilian royalty. It was a place to escape, a place for extravagant parties and lazy afternoons. But it was also, during the world wars, a hospice — a place for nursing the wounded back to health. A recent renovation aims to reignite its former spirit.

A grand, three-story mansion on the edge of the lake, the villa has sweeping lawns, with views across the water to the mountains beyond. The setting is the big draw, but the house is also notable for its understated elegance — bright rooms flooded with natural light, picture windows taking full advantage of the great vistas. Furnishings are simple, offering a gentle nod to the building’s royal history.

Described by its owners as a “boutique villa”, Villa Weiss now has 10 suites and one chalet, which can be reserved individually. However, the entire house can also be rented privately for events. There is a spacious garden with sunbeds, and a private beach that invites guests to make the most of the lake.

The Chalet or “honeymoon suite” is a standalone space which is perfect for guests who want their privacy. A romantic balcony offers a stunning view of the lake. Breakfast in bed is available.

Each of the other suites varies in character — with different numbers of beds, different facilities, and varying views. Some are immediately adjacent to the turquoise lake, while others have views of the surrounding meadows and the church steeple and rooftops of nearby Attersee. Some rooms can be combined, and almost all have the capacity for extra kids’ beds.

This luxury boutique hotel in Austria is perfect for any size of group, or for one person getting away from it all.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Hairdryer, TV and fast WiFi in all rooms. There is a 24-hour self-service honesty bar in common areas. A small breakfast is included in the price. For the breakfast buffet, there is an additional charge of €20 per guest per day. There is free parking for one car per suite, and it is possible to dock private boats upon request.

AROUND

Although the villa has a cafe, and some of the suites has kitchen facilities, there is also a great selection of restaurants nearby. The owners are happy to provide recommendations. If you’re looing for outdoor activities, the area is well-known for its great water sports, sailing, golfing, horse-riding and hiking.

Culture buffs, don’t miss the Salzburg Festival (Salzburger Festspiele), which is held every summer for five weeks (starting late July) in nearby Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Other attractions include the Gustav Klimt Center in Schoerfling am Attersee (a new exhibition space dedicated to the artist, with an outdoor Artist Trail), and the Attersee Klassik music festival.

LOCATION

Attersee am Attersee, Austria. Nearest airports: Salzburg (30-40 mins), Munich (2 hours), Vienna (2.5 hours).

BEST TIME TO VISIT: The Villa is open mid-May to mid-September.

Casa Vendicari, Sicily, Italy

Designed and built by Milan based architect Marco Merendi, this holiday home for rent in Sicily is a striking structure of pure form that respects the light, the character and the silence of the Sicilian land.

Located just outside of the Vendicari Nature Reserve, the home has infinite horizon views of the reserve and out to sea from a privileged and private spot. Discovered by chance when on vacation, the house was inspired by the island’s unique scenery which Merendi has interpreted into a contemporary context without detracting from it’s natural character. A careful symbiosis is expressed through the choice of the locally quarried stone from Noto and lava stone from Mt. Etna, with bold, Brutalist forms and seamless transitions between inside and out.

The large living area has floor to ceiling walls of glass on either side that open out onto the pool area served by terraces with numerous lounge areas. Large sheet-metal sunscreens run along the façade, shaping and fragmenting the light in the warmest hours, creating origami-like designs on the floor, and allowing fresh sea breezes to circulate. Internally, the panoramic living area is punctuated on either side with walls of stone and a centrally positioned lava stone fireplace. The beautiful ‘made to measure’ island kitchen dominates the space and is designed with entertaining in mind. There are three en suite double bedrooms with lovely views over the surrounding almond groves, salt lagoons, and out to sea with room for six guests.

Constructed from lava stone, the pool is placed in a central position like a large Arabian bathtub and is surrounded by the lounge terraces with an outdoor kitchen and al fresco dining areas. This is the magical spot at night for long convivial ‘aperitivo’ under the moon and stars.

This unique home offers a simple but dramatic version of luxury with sharp architectural design that highlights the beauty of nature in a stylish and relaxed atmosphere.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Housekeeping included (3 hours Mondays and Wednesdays) with mid-week linen change, mid-week pool maintenance. Satellite TV and Wifi with iPhone docking audio and powered stereo speakers. Laundry facilities, safe, private security service alarm system. Private outdoor parking (uncovered). The house is heated from November 15 through March.

AROUND

Immersed next to the protected and stunningly beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve and just a twenty minute walk to some of the best beaches on the island, you’ll have the best of both worlds. The reserve is located halfway between Noto and Pachino extending into almost four thousand acres of forests and undisturbed marine and bird eco-systems that open to a clear sea and long, golden beaches including: Tonnara, Eloro, Pizzuta, Calamosche and Marianelli (they are all easily accessible within a short drive or walk from the house).

The pretty seaside fishing village of Marzamemi is ten minutes drive and is well know for it’s seafood and the central Tonnara square, full of traditional restaurants and bars as well as its film festival in July.

Nearby Noto is a historic UNESCO World Heritage site with some of the most spectacular and elegant Baroque sites in the world and is one of the gems in the greater Val di Noto region along with its sister cities of Modica, Ragusa and Scicli, all reachable within a short drive. Make a day of it.

The port town of Siracusa is a significant archaeological area with an ancient Greek amphitheater, the Orecchio di Dionisio Cave, Apollo’s Temple and the Teatro Romana ruins. Be sure not to miss the Ortigia neighborhood.

The Marina di Modica, Marina di Ragusa and the Andrea Doria promenade, feature some of the areas most popular beaches on the island including Sampieri, Pozzallo and Donnalucata.

LOCATION

Vendicari, Sicily, Italy. Nearest Airport: Catania (94km), Comiso Airport (78km), Palermo (323km)

Placed along a babbling river bank in the heart of Burgundy’s “Côte-d’Or,” this cabin rental in France is a chic and surprising version of the rustic idyll.

Designed by France based Ar-Tek Architects, its straightforward silhouette is in striking harmony with nature. Sharing the vast estate with an early 19th century mill (Moulin de la Roche) and a companion cabin, the property has been granted four stars by Côte d’Or Tourism and was developed by the owner to celebrate and share the landscape.

Composed of timber cladding with large bay windows that capture the views, the interiors are spare and light with all-in-one living, dining and kitchen area that is spacious but intimate. There is one double bedroom and one bathroom with room for two.

Outside, you can relax on the deck overlooking the river and in the loungers scattered among the trees, or sink into the Dutch hot tub with Spring water heated by a wood burning fire.

An exceptional spectacle anytime of the day, you’ll be visited by the Gallinules, ducks, herons, storks, deer, foxes, and come nightfall, marvel at a sky full of stars.

Set just outside of the small village of San Rafael a short drive from Ibiza Town and it’s world class beaches, this small luxury hotel in Ibiza is surrounded by pristine gardens and soft green hills rolling down to azure seas. Created as a private oasis, the hotel captures the essence of Ibiza living with a laid back Boho vibe.

Composed in traditional Spanish style in adobe, timber and tile, the building wraps around the central gardens creating the private central courtyard. Consisting of ten double rooms, each has a private terrace with poolside views and all are well equipped with the modern comforts of home.

Featuring an eclectic mix of vintage, contemporary and natural design concepts, the effect is a chic combination of casual and luxurious.

The Texas Bar is a fun, open lounge and there is a fresh juice bar serving up fruity concoctions. The restaurant serves mostly seasonal, local and organic fare in a unique fusion of Spanish, Peruvian and Asian influences.

Well known for its party reputation, in Ibiza town it never stops, but there are also sheltered coves, quiet stretches of coastline and lovely inland forests to explore. The picturesque local village of San Rafael is located on the main road between Ibiza Town and San Antonio with stunning views all the way down to the harbor. Well known as the island’s only “Zona de Interés Artesanal,” due to its traditional pottery and ceramics workshops, there is a wonderful selection of pottery made the same way it’s been made since it was introduced to the island thousands of years ago. There is also an abundance of great cafes and pubs that serve freshly sourced and caught local fare.

And of course for the brave revelers, you can dive headlong into the fray and enjoy the fun and nightlife on Playa D’en Bossa and the dizzying pulse of the city to the south.

Modern Glam, Notting Hill, London, UK

One of the things we love most about London is walking, exploring streets lined with trees and Victorian terraces, checking out cafes and shops. Notting Hill is one of those neighborhoods that’s particularly fun to explore on foot, given its great pubs and restaurants, boutiques and markets – most notably Portobello Road. If you love antiques and vintage, this flat is well located for getting up early and hitting the market before the crowds arrive.

Located on the first floor of a Victorian conversion, it retains much of the charm of the original building like the original wooden floor, tall windows and high ceiling, but it’s been updated with functional conveniences like built-in storage units and a streamlined kitchen. The decor is a blend of British and European modern design, including a Tom Dixon gold pendant light, large Louis Philippe gilt mirror, and a whimsical white pendant monkey light. The blue velvet sofa and grey armchair, book-lined shelves, and cool antiques give the flat a lovely lived-in feel.

The petite bedroom has a full-sized bed with a firm Memory Foam mattress, and large windows with blinds. The simple modern bathroom has a tub with rain showerhead and an unexpected vintage Venetian mirror.

This is a great vacation home rental in London for a single occupant or a couple sharing.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

The kitchen comes fully equipped with refrigerator, dishwasher, induction hob, oven, microwave, washer/dryer, coffee maker, toaster, and kettle. There is a TV. Wifi and a hairdryer.

AROUND

What can we say about Notting Hill that hasn’t been said before? A diverse, friendly community famous for its Carnival which takes over the streets every year in August, it’s chock full of trendy cafes, shops, gastro pubs and restaurants, as well as the legendary Electric Cinema.

The flat is located close to Ladbroke Grove tube on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, which makes getting into central London remarkably easy. It’s also well located for Paddington (Heathrow Express) and King’s Cross (Eurostar), if you’re travelling further afield. Other tubes within easy distance are Latimer Road and Notting Hill Gate.

But if you’ve got all day, we highly recommend a wander through Notting Hill down to Kensington Gardens and Palace, through Hyde Park and even Green Park. Once you’ve had your fill of the Royal Parks, you can jump on a bus and be in the West End before you know it.

If you’d like any advice about what to do, the owners (a German-Jamaican-British couple) can recommend everything from where to get a good haircut to where to find the best Acke and Saltfish.
