Nestled into the hillsides of the Sierra Nevada mountains, this vacation home rental in Andalucia has been seamlessly restored to bring out its authentic Cortijo style.

Designed by the British furniture designer Matthew Hilton and Corrina Dean, architecture writer and artist, the house is a simple and straightforward blend of rustic Spanish and modern style. Built using traditional building methods of the region, the house feels contemporary with the atmosphere and style of a simple country dwelling.

Stylish and traditional, the subtle Moorish features of white washed adobe and slate tile are nicely paired with an interesting selection of handpicked antiques and local decor in a neutral earthy palette.

The warm and inviting open plan living room features a central fireplace and dining area adjacent to the kitchen with French doors that open out to the terrace and BBQ area. Spacious and family friendly, the home features four bedrooms (three are doubles and one twin) that sleeps eight.

The pool was designed by a local pool architect and is raised to give the best views of the surrounding mountains and is filled with water from the mountain snow in the spring. The garden is a rustic half acre of olive groves, fig, walnut, orange and pomegranate trees and irrigated via an ancient system first built by the Moors that settled in the area with multiple outdoor living spaces built for entertaining.

Casual and stylish, this home invites you to relax and enjoy the Andalusian countryside together and away from it all.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

AROUND

La Alpujarra in Andalucia is a mountainous region near Granada stretching south from the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain. The Western part of the region lies in the province of Granada and the eastern part is in the province of Almeria. The warm southerly climate combined with runoff from the Sierra Nevada, make the valleys of Alpujarras among the most fertile in the country.

A rural community that thrives much as it has for centuries, the area is home to verdant farms, sleepy villages and a local goat herd that passes in front of the house every day on the way to the river for water.

Famed for its flat roofed white washed Arabic villages that cluster into the mountain ranges, the picturesque villages of Bubion and Capiliera can be seen nestled into the slopes from the patio.

There are beautiful walks all around, with the ancient olive-tree route passing close to the house, with plenty of local activities to enjoy including horse-back riding, mountain biking, yoga, spa therapies (in nearby Lanjarron), or just lazy days by the pool. There’s a selection of good restaurants, cafes, tapas bars and local shops in the nearby village of Orgiva as well as a weekly market and the frequent fiesta celebrations at various times throughout the year. The almond blossom in February is breath-taking, as is the olive harvesting in December and January.  A visit to the Alhambra can be easily done in a day.

The whitewashed town of Sant Josep with its Baroque church at the center and the stone Torre des Savinar watchtower with views of Es Vedrà Island, is a quiet spot on what is otherwise a slightly hedonistic destination.

Beyond that, there is much to explore beyond the clubs and nightlife. The emerald waters and rugged island terrain offer multiple recreational options including all water sports and fishing, hiking and biking, golf and horseback riding for nature lovers.

The picturesque local village of San Agustin is a peaceful pedsetrian village or you can dive headlong into the fray and enjoy the fun and nightlife on Playa D’en Bassa or the quieter and picturesque Benniras. The VIP beaches of Blue Marlin and Yemanja are just a few kilometers from the villa and Sol Dén Serra Talamanca, Figueretas, Es Codolar, Cala Jondal and Cala Llonga beaches are all within a short drive. Wandering through the narrow winding alleyways in the historic center of the city, brings you to this unique vacation home rental in Modica. Overlooking some of the charming decorated balconies, rooftops and secret hidden courtyards below, the townhouse is immersed in the tightly knit town among the jumble of ancient structures.

Completely renovated by a handful of skilled local artisans with Modica stone, pitchstone, natural materials and a soothing, minimalist palette, the effect is simple and elegant.

On the first floor there are two double en-suite bedrooms that sleep four and a well equipped kitchen with a luminous terrace for dining al fresco. There’s also a small studio lounge and media room with a library.

Interior design is kept simple and chic with family heirlooms and pieces sourced from travels through South and Central America.

On the ground floor guests have access to an interconnecting environment that includes a patio with an original well and the living room where a cave was unearthed during restoration, lending atmospheric charm to an already unique environment. Peaceful and sheltered, the spaces are ideal for an escape from the outside world to enjoy the scent of lemon blossom and jasmine.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Wifi throughout, satellite cable TV, kitchen and bath amenities, laundry facilities, free parking nearby.

AROUND

Part of a staggering collection of UNESCO designated towns in the Val di Noto (including Ragusa and Scicli), Modica sneaks up on you. A startling and amazingly dense and intricate town nestled down into a deep gorge, it’s a jaw dropping site as you approach.

Leveled by the earthquake in 1693, Sicilians were serious about reestablishing this Baroque masterpiece. Duomo di San Giorgio is the centerpiece although there are multiple architectural treasures throughout the town.

Alto o Basso? Either way you need to be hearty and able bodied for the number of steps and twists and turns in this city. Corso Umberto (basso) is the main drag with shops and dining while the medieval quarter (alto) lies above. Do both.

Cacao imports during the  Spanish reign created the happy accident of a uniquely Sicilian version of chocolate found only in Modica – a delicious local specialty.  Check for dates (it varies) for the Wonka-esque Eurochocolate festival held here.

Cava D’Ispica is just outside of Modica and is odd and interesting archeological treasure. A series of neolithic  burial sites and a former chapel, they were later middle ages dwellings.

With over 50 miles of coastline, the two best beaches nearby are Sampieri and Marina di Modica (avoid in August when you’ll battle for space).

Black is back

Discreet and unassuming but never the wallflower, black houses are the tall, dark and handsome strangers of architecture. It’s a bit of a thing at the moment, and rightly so.

All around the world, architects are turning to black as it blends better into the mossy barks of surrounding trees, scorched volcanic stones, and shady forests, disappearing into the darkness at nightfall. They have often been led to the dark side by sheer practicality: Preparation of the most robust and weatherproof finishes traditionally involves tar or bitumen.

Stained, painted, blackened timber or coated steel, here are our picks of black houses on BoutiqueHomes that stand out in their effort to blend in.

Black houses

Midsland Cottage Terschelling, Netherlands

This practical and cheerful cottage on the island of Terschelling balances the bold black wash of its exteriors with light and airy blonde interiors. Architect: Depot Rotterdam.

Black houses

De Grote Beer Terschelling, Netherlands

This family-friendly vacation home in Terschelling is proof that black can be just as joyous as its vibrant counterparts. Created for slow living and stargazing, the interiors are furnished with colors that popagainst its dramatic exteriors, and glass cut-outs on the roof let the stars in. Architect: Depot Rotterdam.

Black houses

Black A-Frame Yosemite, CA

BoutiqueHomes founders Heinz Legler and Veronique Lièvre are big believers that black blends better into nature, so it was a natural choice for this A-Frame cabin they built on this bucolic clearing within the wilderness of Yosemite.

Black houses

Casa Hualle Pucon, Chilé

This origami-evoking house set against the majestic Villarrica volcano has the delicate manners of adapting to the area’s color palette. The charred hue of its dark-stained softwood slats mimic neighboring buildings constructed using black volcanic stone from the region. Architects: Ampueroyutronic (Javier Ampuero, Catalina Yutronic, and Andy Wakefield.

Black houses

Tepoztlan Bungalow Tepoztlan, Mexico

This minimalist construction of steel, glass and concrete tucked into the Mexican jungle was painted black and lined with floor-to-ceiling windows to “minimize its visual impact on the landscape”. Architects: Cadaval & Sola-Morales.

Black houses

Totland Bay House Isle of Wight, England

Black may appear to be a shady choice for a summer home, but this 2015 RIBA winner for “Best New Build” demonstrates that it works just fine. Its exterior timber elements are covered with a thick bituminous paint used to protect boats, all the better for life on the isle. Architect: Dow Jones architects.

Black houses

Danish Summerhouse Gilleleje Gribskov, Denmark

What’s more natural than a black and white summer home in the Danish Riviera? This sunny Scandinavian beauty fits elegantly into its picturesque surroundings, also home to the UNESCO site of King Christian V’s royal hunting grounds.

Black houses

The Black House Bogarnes, Iceland

This pure timber country cottage in Bogarnes, home to the dramatic Snæfellsjökull glacier immortalized by Jules Verne in his novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, camouflages itself with a deep black pitch originally derived from natural tar to withstand the elements.

Black houses

Bolton Residence Quebec, Canada

This cantilevered home floats among the trees on a rugged plot of wooded land in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. Clad in a black steel skin, the scenery becomes a silent black and white picture in winter. Architect: _naturehumaine.

Conversation with the Sibarist

$

For as long as she can remember, Silvia Hengstenberg has been looking at houses with her family. Her mother, her mother’s sisters, her grandparents… Seven years ago, she and her mother Sylvia Girón took on the renovation of a family estate, Sylvia as interior designer and Silvia using her hotel consultant skills. They enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to go into business together. Today, the mother-and-daughter team are The Sibarist, a 360-degree property service based in Madrid, that brings together management, hospitality, interior design and art. And we are fortunate to have a number of their homes in our collection, in Madrid and farther afield in destinations like Ibiza. We sat down with them to find out more, starting with…

What is a Sibarist exactly?

“Sibarist for us means a way to be in this world; it’s a way of appreciating beauty, design, the unique, and not only what is tangible, but also the experiences on offer — the feeling of well-being, the relationship with our senses. A view, music, a beautiful table, a good meal with friends, cooked in a cozy kitchen, a sunset in a special enclave. All these details are key for us. The property itself does not have to be a luxury house. On occasions, it’s the contrary. It’s a question of selecting properties with soul and essence… simple yet absolute luxury, for their uniqueness or the unique experience they can offer.”

Sibarist Sibarist Sibarist Sibarist Sibarist Sibarist

How do you choose your properties?

“We consider the overall space, its potential and character. It has to offer something special. Though the location is important, we have selected properties in emergent barrios (the Spanish way of saying ‘authentic neighborhood’) and we have given them the bohemian character of the area. That, for us, has been the most entertaining experience – bringing out its essence and giving each one its personality. We also manage properties that have been created by interior designers whose style we like and whose philosophy we share.”

You talk about using all five senses in your design. Why is that so important?

“Senses, for us, form part of the essence. Usability and comfort are as important as design. The creation of the space is focused on the travelers’ needs and what will fulfill them best. We work with the energy of the spaces, and we balance all elements within them to connect them directly with the senses.

“For sight, we take color and design into account. When entering the property, the traveler falls in love. First impressions are truly important. For touch, the sensation of natural textures. As we all carry a bon vivant within us, we make sure all visitors are treated to 100% Egyptian cotton sheets or a large cosy towel after a relaxing bath or shower.

“For smell, we love natural and subtle aromas. They can offer well-being and improve rest. For this reason we have created our own line of soaps, gels and pillow spray, made out of essential oils, without parabens, and inspired by the flowers of our countryside.

“For taste, the kitchen is a vital space in the house and we take every detail into account, all the equipment you may need to cook is in the kitchen. For hearing, no matter how central the apartment is, we want our spaces to be as quiet as possible.”

Sibarist Sibarist Sibarist Sibarist Sibarist

Why did you decide to create a Picasso apartment?

“When we were asked to carry out this project, we decided to make a colorful and bohemian house, just like the area it’s located in. You can see a mural just in front of one of the balconies which states that Picasso lived there a period of his life. The colors of the area — blue, ochre, maroon — captivated us. We had found the beginning of our path… to create a house like the barrio itself, full of vibrant colors, just like the artist’s work. The type of house Picasso would have lived in during the 21st century.

“We applied the colors of Feng Shui with advice from experts. A violet, purple and cherry-colored kitchen? Why not! What an overall experience: a room with predominant green and blue, yellow radiators, a cherry-colored kitchen, elements such as wood and metal… none of it distributed randomly.

“A house for us represents a space we treat with utter respect and that should offer its best to all of its guests. It’s the place where you recharge your batteries, you recover. It’s your temple, and for this reason we take care when selecting the materials for the renovation. We work with artisans, artists, we search for singular pieces we give a second life to. And the result is a signature house with personality and character.”

What do you love about Madrid?

Silvia Hengstenberg: “What I love about Madrid is how vibrant it is, and the possibilities it offers, both culturally and in terms of leisure. Its gastronomy definitely stands out as well as the authenticity of its barrios. Madrid is special because it’s so complete, an experience in itself… you have to live here as it’s not possible to explain it all in words! People say that Madrid can trap you, and they always mention how the kindness and joyfulness of its people stand out. I’m from Madrid — I should know!”

Silvia Girón: “Madrid is becoming more and more cosmopolitan. Its cultural heritage continues evolving and being reappraised. Its buildings, fashion shops, its cared-for gardens. It’s always bubbling and always transforming. It’s such a welcoming city — you will definitely want to come back.”

What do you look for when you travel?

Silvia Hengstenberg: “That depends where I go. I enjoy old barrios, those that tell you a story, to get lost in their streets, restaurants, taverns, art galleries… I love everything which takes me to the heart and essence of each place. I am a defender of the authentic. I dislike products that have been created for tourists. They are often expensive and bad. I like what is real, what the local people would choose. Design is a very important factor — beautiful and cared-for spaces will always be more attractive.”

Sylvia Girón: “Factors that are important for me are (in order of importance): comfort, a good place to go to at the end of the day and rest, a good shower and if possible a nice relaxing bath, good healthy food, cooked with taste and feeling. Design is also very important, the colors of the place, the views. I am especially fond of the artistic. I enjoy delving into the culture of the place, getting to know its people, their customs, their human side. The experience of all this together is what makes my trip.”

Now owned by an artist but made famous by beloved California broadcaster Huell Howser, this modern vacation rental in Twenty Nine Palms shares his love and appreciation for all things California and is a fitting tribute to his passion and enthusiasm of classic mid-century style.

Set within a vast spread of almost eighty acres, the property is adjacent to Joshua Tree National Park, with spectacular uninterrupted views of the desert and mountains.

Improving on the existing single story layout without disturbing the original design, Howser sought to create a communal, creative environment with an airy, indoor/outdoor flow.

The light-filled living spaces, feature pieces created by the owner including a triptych on plywood, a unique wood-based tripod lamp, and a sunset-hued tree light and classic designs by Eames.

The gourmet kitchen includes the original 1950’s era stove along with gleaming modern amenities, and a breakfast nook, with an adjacent indoor dining room that opens out to the zero-scaped patio.

Each of the two minimalist inspired bedrooms feature big picture windows and sliding glass doors leading to the pool area. The en suite master includes a daybed and there is a media room with a sleeper sofa, with room for a total of seven guests. The shared bath still has the cool 50’s tile and fixtures.

The outdoor areas have a magical quality, with Howser’s industrial installations remaining decades later, each piece thoughtfully laid in the ground at the same angle as the mountains beyond, creating the feeling of a modern sculpture garden. A Corten steel paneled fence surrounds the perimeter, and the back patio opens to a full-length swimming pool and outdoor spa surrounded by chaise lounge chairs and a vintage two-seat swing. Designed for entertaining, there is a large dining table (which converts into a professional ping-pong table), a BBQ grill and an indoor/outdoor stereo system to complete the ultimate high-desert experience.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Gated secure entry. Optional catering available, housekeeping and laundry facilities. Wifi throughout, widescreen HD monitors for cable TV, Netflix, DVDs games, indoor/outdoor stereo system with phone/iPod connectivity and CDs.

There are miles of outdoor desert adventure in the area as well as several unique attractions and interesting local museums and art venues to visit such as the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, and the famed Integratron as well as the historic Pioneertown.

A kitschy Hollywood relic founded in the 1940s as an authentic frontier town movie set, today there are a few shops, cafes and galleries to visit including the famous Pappy and Harriets Pioneertown Palace.

Further afield, the San Jacinto mountains rise above the desert floor and are lined with miles of hiking trails at a cooler elevation. Indian Canyon and Palm Springs are also within driving distance of the house for the rural getaways in the Coachella Valley area.

Conversation with Christian Sarubi

When it comes to design, Christian Sarubi is a jack of all trades. After a seven-year spell in Toronto designing jewelry, he returned to his native Mexico City eight years ago and started designing boutique home rentals. With a growing collection of properties throughout the city’s wildly diverse neighborhoods, he’s been indulging his love of design in colorful and playful spaces filled with eclectic vintage finds. We’ve really been enjoying getting to know Christian and his work, and we thought we’d share a little about him.

Christian Sarubi Christian Sarubi Christian Sarubi Christian Sarubi Christian Sarubi Christian Sarubi

Christian Sarubi, how would you describe your style?

CS: “I am a self-taught interior designer, and creating boutique short-term rentals gives me the opportunity to learn while having creative freedom. I think I’m still exploring a style, but I always feel inclined to a timeless, chic, rich yet simple space. Bauhaus design and its lines always make a peekaboo in my apartments.”

How do you choose your homes?

CS: “I find the space chooses itself. My partner and I walk in, and the apartment speaks. It can say, ‘Listen, I have great potential, just look at my bones.’ Or maybe it’s a view that speaks. Then we just feel it and imagine it. Maybe there is a piece of furniture in the warehouse that I have been waiting to use, or maybe there is something I have been waiting to try, and this place is just perfect for it.”

Does each home have its own unique concept?

CS: “Yes, since they are all very different properties, in architecture and also location. In the more bohemian neighborhoods Roma and Condesa, we tend to make them more fun. In upscale Polanco, we always try to keep a certain level of sophistication.”

What are some of the more unusual features we’ll find in your homes?

CS: “I visit the antique markets frequently so I am always acquiring something interesting, especially vintage lamps. I just can’t resist when I find something amazing! I live in a small apartment, and my boyfriend will not let me bring one more item into the house. So my guests are the lucky ones!”

What do you love about your hometown?

CS: “I love its diversity and how real it feels. I love the food, the architecture and the mix of people. I love that you can be surprised by the unexpected.”

What do you look for when you travel?

CS: “I am as much of a foodie as I am a design fan, so my trips are very much planned based on the food, and my stays are chosen, after location, on design 100%. I believe that good design is paramount for the mind to relax, so definitely staying at a well-designed space is part of what I call a holiday.”

What do you look for in a vacation home?

OL: “Something remote, romantic with a stunning view.”

@lustforlife

What do you prefer–vacation home rentals or boutique hotels?

OL: “I love both! I love boutique hotels if I’m traveling in a city but prefer vacation homes for remote getaways on holiday with family and friends.”

What do you think every vacation home should have?

OL: “Board games and a fully-equipped kitchen.”

What’s your idea of luxury?

OL: “Exclusive and discreet with a highly-tuned eye for details.”

@lustforlife

What is your deciding factor when choosing a travel destination?

OL: “If there’s a beach nearby or a charming town with market stalls and great food.”

What is your preferred architectural/interior style for a vacation home?

OL: “It varies depending on where I am in the world, but I love properties that play on the unique features of the surrounding environment.”

City, countryside, mountain, or sea?

OL: “Countryside and the sea in the summer, city and mountain in fall and winter.”

What’s your ideal vacation?

OL: “Boating to a sleepy coastal town or village and eating simple but gourmet fare everyday while I’m there.”

What’s the story?

We can never resist a good story at BoutiqueHomes. After all, the soul of a home is the life that it has seen. Here’s our pick of four properties with heart and history, present and future, and tales to tell.

Homes with history

I Conversi in The Abbey of San Giusto Tuscania, Italy

Six hundred years ago, the Abbey of San Giusto was home to the Cistercian order, known for their expertise in working land and water. Legend has it that the irresistible trappings of the land had led to a lapse in monastic discipline, and so the abbey was emptied and fell into ruin, only to be adopted by a shepherd and his wandering sheep. In 1990, Mauro Checcoli, a Bolognese engineer better known for his Olympic gold medal in horse-riding, came upon the ruin, acquired it from the shepherd, and thus began another era of devotion — a loving and arduous restoration to return it to its 12th-century splendor that spanned 25 years, two generations and a good measure of that beautiful kind of crazy. Today, the abbey (pictured above and top) welcomes lovers of art, history, and nature, eager to share its story.

Villa Olivi Treia, Le Marche, Italy

On the last day of a week of house hunting in Le Marche, Swiss architects Markus Wespi and Jérôme de Meuron pulled up at the ruins of a 300-year-old farmhouse and found exactly what they were looking for. Partly consumed by a fire in 1995, the walls stood quietly amidst the rubble of a crumbling roof and cindered interiors. The idea of losing this beautiful piece of history moved the Italian Cultural and History Administration to take it under its wing and oversee the restoration into which Markus and Jérome poured their imagination. From the ashes, they built a whitewashed interior, clean, minimal and modern, while preserving its ancient shell, and named the farmhouse after Giovanni Olivi, the man who turned the dovecote on their little farm.

Numero Venti Rm.4 Florence, Italy

A story of the present and the future, set in a beautiful past… Martino di Napoli Rampolla was working as a graphic designer between Belgium and Barcelona, but always felt drawn back to Florence. After an event in a beautiful empty palazzo, he got together with Andrew Totter, interior designer and editor of OpenHouse magazine, to make something of the space for the creative community, and so began their story of hosting artists and exhibitions. Today, the palazzo is Numero Venti, an artists’ residence, atelier, exhibition space, and a set of beautifully fitted apartments set beneath faded frescoes and soaring ceilings. The apartments invite guests to unwind in a reflective space conducive to creation. Proceeds from the rental are reinvested into the residency program to fund artists and artistic development throughout the city.

Priory Grounds Eye, Suffolk, UK

The theme of ruins and rebirth continues with Priory Grounds, now in its third life. Once the priory of Benedictine monks in the 11th century, it fell into ruin after dissolution and lived a second life as farm buildings. In 2006, it became the object of the affection of fashion director Olivia Pomp and her art director husband Gary Rowland who saw great potential in its tumbling frames. Five years of renovations later, the property was transformed into a six-bedroom country home fitted with eco-friendly energy sources.

Conversation with Nicholas Chiotellis

Athena Penthouse is a big corner flat in the heart of Athens, located rather enviably at the foot of the Acropolis. From its terrace, the ancient temple shines in the sunset; from its balconies, the activities of the restaurants and bars provide a live show. Inside, a very special light shines on great collectible furniture from the last decade of the 20th century. It’s not surprising to find out from its owner Nicholas Chiotellis that this characterful, 19th-century house has served as the home of a poet, a dancer and an architect, and that it once even served as a movie set.

Nicholas, what’s the history of this house?

Nicholas Chiotellis: “My grandfather bought this building in the 1970s. We know that a century before that, it was the house of a Greek poet, Georgios Drossinis. He was probably sitting at this window, in the living room, watching an almond tree, and he wrote from here a poem called ‘Checking the blooming almond tree’. Then the house became a nightlife attraction, a kind of dance hall with an orchestra and a bar, and later on it was a set for a famous TV show. Finally, my grandfather bought it and renovated it, and my parents came to live here. This house was my family home when I was a kid.”

A poet, some musicians, a TV set and then your father… This is a house for art and artists!

NC: “Yes, kind of. My father is an architect, and he designed a lot of things here. Every little detail like doors, lights, wall paintings and closets are from him. He designed the fireplace and the bookshelf. As an architect, he has an idea of space and light. I didn’t change anything from that period.”

It’s very 1990s, isn’t it? Which is not so common…

NC: “You’re right, my parents were in love with great furniture from designers of the ’90s like Philippe Starck. The dining table, the sofa, the chairs with their very particular mix of angles and curves… everything is so ’90s which is not trendy yet, but I like the details. The fact that you cannot see the screws. It’s very well made. The lamps are very ’90s too…. I think my guests like this ambiance. I hope that some elements of this house will be interesting.”

The colors are special too…

NC: “They’re very Greek, the old houses are like that. Buildings are two colors at the same time. Here, we used very sweet colors. I love this because it brings to the apartment a very nice light. I love the light of this place, with all these windows in the very large living room, its high ceiling. And the light changes all the time, even during the night, thanks to all the windows.”

Would you say that is apartment is an unusual place to stay?

NC: “The house was not made to be rented. It was a family house. But I have been renting the apartment since 2014. So I wanted to be able to filter who would come here. I wanted to interact with my guests before they book. I was looking for a platform that could offer me this advantage and which sells something different–because my property is different. Those fine furnitures are from my parents, like the books in the bookshelves… For this kind of ambiance, guests spend a bit more money, and perhaps there is a kind of respect for the house.”

Do you see a difference between guests coming from BoutiqueHomes and from an another platform?

NC: “Yes clearly: Client are more respectful, elegant, educated. For me, BH is a different market.”
