AROUND

Once part of an ancient archipelago, Ile de Re juts out into the Atlantic off of La Rochelle in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

Just nineteen miles long, the island is a chic yet laid back destination dotted with pretty villages, quaint harbor towns, lovely golden beaches, dunes and marshlands backed by pine forests.

Criss-crossed with bicycle paths, almost everyone here gets around on two wheels.

The lovely capital, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, is encircled with dramatic 17th century star-shaped fortifications and ramparts with the ancient citadel at its center. The lively harbor town is lined with narrow cobble stone streets and dotted with cafes and shops and a hub of activity.

The little Plage de la Cible is the closest town beach while Le Bois Plage is a short cycle to the south coast. The beach is one of the best on the island and the town hosts a large morning market not to be missed.

Classified as a “Plus Beaux Villages de France”, the little harbour town of La Flotte is just a couple of miles from Saint Martin. Authentic and well preserved, its a charming and friendly town with excellent day and night markets, cafes, and the fascinating ruins of the 12th century Cistercian Abbaye des Châteliers.

Cycle north through the salt marshes to the small village of Loix, where craftsmen and tradesmen open their workshops and visit the nature reserve at Lilleau des Niges on the north-western end.

The best seafood and oyster shacks can be found along the marshes on the  western coast.
